SALISBURY ó Rowan Countyís unemployment rate increased to 11.5 percent in June from 11 percent in May, according to figures released Friday by the N.C. Employment Security Commission.
Cabarrus County also saw an increase to 10.3 percent, compared to 9.6 in May.
Unemployment rates increased in 91 of North Carolinaís 100 counties in June. Rates decreased in six counties and remained the same in three.
ěWhat we are seeing in most metropolitan areas across North Carolina is a loss in government employment,î said Employment Security Commission Chairman Lynn R. Holmes said in a press release. ěThis is partially attributed to changes in local and state education at the end of the school year.î
Counties around Rowan mostly saw a rise in unemployment, as well, with the exception of Davie County, which remained at 9.2 percent.
Davidson ó 11.5 percent for June, May was 10.8.
Iredell ó 11.1 percent for June, May was 10.7
Stanly ó 11.3 percent for June, May was 10.6.
North Carolina had 46 counties with rates at or below the stateís June unemployment rate of 10.4 percent, which was up from 9.7 percent in May.
Rates increased in all 14 of the stateís Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
Currituck County had the stateís lowest unemployment rate in June, at 5.5 percent. Meanwhile, Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate, at 17.1 percent.
