Alex Nianouris became the Warrior club champion on Sunday by defeating Joey Boley on the second hole of a playoff.
Nianouris followed his opening-round 69 with a 73, while Boley had 68-74 to also finish at 142. Finishing one shot back was Gerald Staton at 70-73 — 143. Others in the championship flight were Richard Cobb (144), Chris Owen (144), Mike Mills (146), David Miller (146), Matt Gryder (151), Jackson Griffin (151) and Randy Bates (151).
Successfully defending his Senior title with a score of 71-69 — 142 was Dean Harwood. Ronnie Furr finished second at 160.
Also winning flights were Jon Adams (first, 146), Luke Robbins (second, 158), Gary Chastain (third, 153) and Todd Deaton (fourth, 171).
Three Salisbury teens participated in the U.S. Kids Teen World Championship in the Pinehurst area on July 28-30.
Isabella Rusher, rising freshman at Salisbury High, played in the girls 14s at Pine Needles Country Club, shot 78-81-78 — 237 and finished 16th out of 38 golfers.
Alex Austin and Joey Rusher, 16-year- old rising juniors at Salisbury, played in the boys 15-18 division at Pinehurst No. 2, site of the 2014 U.S. Open.
Austin shot 77-77-75 — 229 and finished 30th out of 104 golfers. Rusher shot 75-78-83 — 236 and was 44th. The difficult course was set up at 7,019 yards. There were 492 teens in six divisions in the tournament from all across the U.S. and 29 foreign countries.
Chip Spain made a hole-in-one on No. 3 at The Club at Irish Creek on Saturday.
Spain used a pitching wedge on the 129-yard hole. Ed Hopper, Greg Rumple and Tommy Kilby witnessed the feat.n The McCanless Couples traveled to Pudding Ridge in Mocksville on Saturday for an 18-hole, two-man, best-ball match.
First place with a score of 76 went to Beverly Cobb and Tim Earnhardt. Sheila Livengood and Paul Cotton placed second in a scorecard playoff with Treva Honeycutt and Juan Garcia with a 78.
Closest to the pin went to Yvonne Barger on No. 2 and Ken Houston on No. 12. Cliff Full won longest putt on No. 8, with Robin Leslie winning longest putt on No. 16.
The McCanless Couples played a 9-hole, two-man Texas Scramble format on Sunday.
Winning the event was the team of Matt and Sharon Miller, followed by the team of Gene and Mary Seaford. Third was the team of Carlos Garcia and Chris Livengood. Closest to the pin winner was Matt Miller and longest putt winner was Sharon Miller.
The annual Adult/Child Golf Tournament at McCanless will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, at 1 p.m. There are division for 9U, 10-13, 14-17 and 18-Up, flighted.
The tournament is for all ages and abilities. Entry deadline is Aug. 3.
Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot 73-72 — 145 and missed the cut at the Nationwide Tour’s Utah Championship.
Prep baseball
Davie County baseball coach Mike Herndon announced that two of his rising senior standouts made verbal college commitments.
Ryan Foster, 8-2 on the mound with two saves and a 1.07 ERA, plans to sign with UNC Wilmington. Foster pitched eight complete games and struck out 66 in 651/3 innings.
Also a third baseman, Foster hit .358 with three homers and 24 RBIs for a 22-3 team as a junior.
Corey Randall, a pitcher and first baseman, plans to sign with UNC Asheville. He batted .425 with eight homers and 27 RBIs as a junior for the War Eagles.
Randall was 5-0 on the mound with a 2.41 ERA and struck out 22 in 201/3 innings.
Wood bat leagues
Noah Holmes (East Rowan) had two hits and two RBIs in Asheboro’s 6-5 Coastal Plain League win against High Point on Saturday.
Trey Holmes (East) will be returning from summer school to rejoin the Asheboro team in the playoffs — if the Copperheads make it.
Asheboro’s Ryan Bostian (South Rowan) is out of action as he recovers from fouling a ball off his leg.
Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) easily won his fifth game in the CPL when Forest City pounded Gastonia 16-2 recently.
A.L. Brown athletics
A.L. Brown’s Teven Jones is headed to Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Va., and will continue his athletic career.
Major leagues
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) took a loss on Sunday as the New York Mets fell 3-2 to Washington. Parnell came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth with the score tied 2-all, and the Nationals were able to score on a single, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and an infield hit.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis used 11 walks to beat the Asheville Tourists 5-2 on Sunday.
Tyler Matzek, a No. 1 draft pick by the Colorado Rockies, no-hit the Intimidators the first four innings, but he walked eight in his five innings of work. Steven Upchurch’s relief pitching keyed the win for the Intimidators.
Jerry Sands (Catawba) connected for his 17th Triple A homer on Saturday.
Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) had three hits for Tacoma on Saturday and tripled on Sunday. He’s hitting .408 in Triple A.
Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) pitched two scoreless innings on Saturday to lower his ERA to 3.13 at Double A New Britain.
Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) had two hits and knocked in his 29th run for Hagerstown on Saturday.
Hudson Valley’s Craige Lyerly (East) also had two hits on Saturday.
Burlington’s Rudy Brown (South Rowan) had a rough relief outing on Sunday. He allowed three runs in 22/3 innings.
