SALISBURY — A Salisbury man was charged with assault after Salisbury Police say he tried to strangle his girlfriend during an altercation at his home.
A Salisbury Police officer responded on July 23 to a home at Jackson Street for a disturbance. When the officer arrived, he noticed a male placing items in a vehicle. He asked the man if the car belonged to him and if he lived at the home.
The man, Jeremy Lynn Patton, told the officer he lived at 306 N. Jackson St., Apt 3. When officers checked the vehicle, it indicated Patton had a different address. He actually lived at apartment No. 2.
After talking with him for a few moments, the officers released him because they did not have a victim, said Capt. Shelia Lingle.
A few moments after Patton was released to leave, a female walked around the corner, obviously shaken up, Lingle said.
The woman said Patton was her boyfriend and they’d just had a fight in the kitchen.
“He pushed her down on the kitchen floor and tried to choke her,” Lingle said.
The woman fought back, grabbing him in the groin area. He released her and she ran out of the apartment.
A police report said the woman had visible injuries to her neck.
Patton was arrested Friday and charged with felony assault by strangulation, misdemeanor resist, delay, obstruct an officer and misdemeanor assault on an officer.
He remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,500 bond.
