SALISBURY — Police say an East Spencer man arrested Tuesday hit a Salisbury man in the head with his own sword before stealing it.
Donnell Lavon Shavers, 26, of 400 Boundary St. in East Spencer, was arrested in connection with a robbery and assault reported about a month ago.
Michael Burch told the Salisbury Police Department he was attacked July 1 at his Partee Street home by someone who knocked at his door.
When he opened the door, a man later identified as Shavers reportedly started shoving Burch and punching him in the face while making his way inside.
Burch was pushed down, he told police, and he reached beside his bed and grabbed a sword. Shavers then took the sword from Burch and struck him in the head with it, according to the police report.
Two more men came in and joined Shavers in hitting Burch, police said, leaving him with deep cuts on his face that required stitches. The three men reportedly took a total of three martial arts swords from the home.
Shavers was charged with felony common law robbery and misdemeanor simple assault and battery or affray. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $5,000 bond.
