Holshouser baptism
Gaberiel Todd Holshouser was baptized on June 26, 2011, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Mooresville.
Pastor Johnny Cozart baptized Gaberiel at the 11 a.m. service. Gaberiel is the son of Todd and Alicia G. Holshouser of Mooresville. He has a sister, Grace Randall Holshouser. Family members attending included grandparents Eric and Lana Brown, Terry and Lynda Holshouser and Steve and Malynda Peeler; great-grand parents Effie Vellines, Margaret Peeler, Judy Brown and Donald and Mildred Wilhelm.
Great-grand parents who could not attend are Louie and Rose Swicegood and Walter Brown.
Family and friends enjoyed lunch after the service hosted by Todd, Alicia and Grace Holshouser.
Lion district governor
CLEVELAND — Gary Locke Steele of Cleveland was one of eight North Carolinians to recently complete a year as District Governor of Lions Clubs International. Steele was installed as a state officer during a ceremony held at the Lions International Convention in Sydney, Australia on July 2, 2010, and ended his term on June 30, 2011, at this year’s international convention in Seattle, Washington.
Steele’s district included 63 clubs in the counties of Anson, Cabarrus, Davidson, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly, and Union. During his term Steele earned several awards for outstanding service to the organization, the “Bright Start” and the “Light Keeper” awards, and the district raised $175,000 for those in need.
Locally Steele has served as president, vice president, secretary/treasurer, board of directors, and on many committees. On the District level he has served as 1st Vice District Governor (VDG), 2nd VDG, Global Membership Team Chair, White Cane Chair, Zone Chair, Bulletin Chair, Director on the NC Lions Foundation Board, and Lions Quest Chair.
Steele is a graduate of West Rowan High School, served for 21 years in the United States Army and retired as a Sergeant First Class. He is an active member and elder at Third Creek Presbyterian Church in Cleveland.
The Cleveland Lions meet the first and third Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Lions Den on Cemetery Street.
Scholarship recipient
Elizabeth Janita Tucker, daughter of Patricia Tucker and Edward D. Tucker, is the 2011 recipient of the $600 scholarship awarded by the United Ministerial Alliance of Rowan-Davie Counties, given each year on a competitive basis to a deserving recent high school graduate who is a member of a church where the pastor is a participating member of the alliance. Her pastor is the Rev. Samuel A. Washington.
Tucker is a 2011 graduate of Davie High School, Mocksville, where she was an active member of the band and the art club. As a member of Salisbury Solid Rock Church Of God, she is involved in the youth choir, the youth ministry and a Sunday school teacher.
In the fall Tucker will attend North Carolina Central University in Durham and plans to become involved in student government and youth projects.
Rousey at space camp
HUNTSVILLE, ALA. — Aaron Rousey of China Grove recently attended space camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, home of Space Camp and NASA’s official Visitor Information Center for Marshall Space Flight Center.
The weeklong educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Rousey was part of the Space Academy Aviation Program which is specifically designed for trainees who have a particular interest in flight. He spent the week training with a team that flew a simulated space shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS), participating in experiments and successfully completing an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), or space walk. Retired space shuttle astronaut Capt. Robert “Hoot” Gibson spoke at their graduation.

Sloop receives award
The China Grove Rotary Club has completed seventy five years of Service Above Self. At a recent meeting of the Club, District 7680 Governor Allen Langley of The Shelby Rotary Club presented a certificate recognizing the founding of the China Grove Rotary Club on 30 December 1936. Ranking senior member of the club, Carl E. Sloop Jr. received the award on behalf of the Club that he has served for more than sixty five years.
The Club’s accomplishments include chairing the fundraising, design and construction of The China Grove Community Center in the late forties, acquisition and major expansions of Cannon Little League Park, founding of Youth Incorporated, considerable contributions to the construction of the South Rowan YMCA, South Rowan Library, South Rowan Library Literary Trail, annual sponsorship of a Manners Luncheon for China Grove Elementary School Fifth Graders, volunteers for the town’s annual Farmer’s Day and annual scholarships for deserving seniors at South Rowan and J.C. Carson High Schools.
Rotary is comprised of business and professional people who dedicate themselves to the Rotary motto, Service Above Self. During the seventy five year life of the club, China Grove Rotarians have been found in active leadership positions of virtually all community endeavors.

Hospice to hold grief support groups
KANNAPOLIS — Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County will hold a morning and evening grief support group for adults beginning Sept. 13 and ending Oct. 18 at the McKinnon Hospice Center, 5003 Hospice Lane.
These groups are free to the public and will run 6 consecutive Tuesday mornings from 10-11:30 a.m. and 6 consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6-7:30 p.m.
The purpose of the groups is to help with their grief those who have experienced the death of a loved one more than three months ago. These groups will closed to new members after the second week.
