SALISBURY ó A Woodleaf woman will have surgery next week to remove broken glass from her arm as the result of a wreck in which her familyís SUV overturned Wednesday morning on East Innes Street.
Vida Pulliam was a passenger in the vehicle driven by her husband, Robert, when it was struck in the driverís side as they drove through the intersection at Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
The couple had just dropped off their 2-year-old son, Christian, at day care, but their 7-year-old son, Emmanuel, was still in the Kia SUV with them.
Stacey Lowder, 20, of Salisbury, ran a red light at Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue going west on East Innes Street and struck the Pulliamsí vehicle, according to the Salisbury Police Department.
Robert Pulliam was driving south across the intersection around 9 a.m. when Lowderís black Kia SUV struck his vehicle, spinning it around before it rolled over and trapped Pulliam, his wife, Vida, and son.
Vida Pulliam said she saw the other SUV out of the corner of her eye but thought the movement was just a pedestrian crossing the street, until the vehicle slammed into hers, rolling it over.
ěI said, ëOh my God, I hope we ainít going to die,í î she said Friday. ěBut God was with us all the way through.î
Emergency crews stabilized the Pulliamsí SUV and used the Jaws of Life to cut them out of the vehicle.
They were taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center where Robert and Emmanuel Pulliam were released after about an hour.
Vida Pulliam stayed in the hospital most of the day, with medical personnel removing as much glass as they could from her arm.
The deeper pieces they couldnít get to will be removed surgically, she said.
