CHINA GROVE — A China Grove man was reportedly shot in the shoulder Tuesday evening inside his RV by a gunman on a motorcycle.
According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Steven Sigmund, 55, was shot inside his RV on Virginia Avenue about two minutes after a man knocked on the vehicle’s door and said he knew Sigmund.
The man told Sigmund his name was Red, according to the report, and that he knew Sigmund and his daughter.
Sigmund told authorities that he spoke to him for just a few minutes and then the man left on foot.
Sigmund said less than two minutes later he heard a motorcycle revving its engine on Virginia Avenue. Sigmund then looked out his window at about 9:48 p.m., the report said, and the gunman opened fire.
When deputies arrived, the report said, Sigmund was holding his left hand to his neck area and told authorities that he had been shot.
Sigmund was hit in the shoulder and was taken to CMC-NorthEast Medical Center.
A neighbor and family member, Frankie Bumgarner, told authorities he had heard gunshots and came to check, finding Sigmund wounded and a man with a full-faced helmet driving away on a motorcycle.
Sigmund’s RV sits on Bumgarner’s property at 380 Virginia Ave. Bumgarner’s home is about 75 feet from the vehicle.
The report said bullet fragments were removed from Sigmund’s right clavicle. Sigmund was treated and released.
The motorcycle was described as a Honda cruiser-type motorcycle with a clear windguard on the front.
The man named Red was described as 5-foot-8, 150 pounds, with a thin face and thin build. The man has a reddish beard.
The motorcycle was last seen heading northwest toward N.C. Hwy. 153.
