The Area IV teams, Shelby (42-2) and the Gaston Braves (27-3) will meet for the American Legion state championsip today in Lexington.
The first game is at 12:30. Gaston hasn’t lost and will win the title if it beats Shelby. A Shelby victory would mean the teams would play a decisive second game at 5 p.m.
In Monday’s games, the Gaston Braves beat Shelby 8-1 in the early game. Wilmington eliminated Wayne County 5-3 in the second game. Shelby rebounded to oust Wilmington, the defending state champs, 4-2 in the late game.
Rowan County Little League’s 10U softball team won twice in the regional in Clarksville, Tenn., on Monday.
Rowan rolled 8-1 against Georgia in an elimination game, and then pounded West Virginia 14-3.
West Virginia handed Rowan (4-1) its only loss in the event in extra innings.
Rowan plays West Virginia at 7 tonight for the regional championship. There is no national tournament for that age group.
Donte Minter’s camp has been rescheduled for Aug. 11-14 at Hall Gym from 9 until 1 daily. Camp price is $65. The camp will provide food for the campers, daily prizes, and camp T-shirts.

Seven outstanding individuals have been selected for induction into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
The late Jack Holley of Teachey, Ralph Holloway of Morehead City, the late Joe Miller of Wilmington, Chris Norman of Shelby, Moyer Smith of Chapel Hill, Rick Strunk of Carrboro and Jerry Winterton of Cary have been named as the 28th group of inductees to join the prestigious hall.
That brings to 163 the number enshrined. See Scoreboard for a list of all members.
The new inductees will be honored during special halftime ceremonies at a football game at Kenan Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 18, when UNC takes on Georgia Tech.
The University of North Carolina has designated the day as the 30th annual NCHSAA Day. The new class will officially be inducted at the special Hall of Fame banquet next spring in Chapel Hill.
Holley won more high school football games as a head coach than any other coach in North Carolina history. He coached for 46 years at a variety of stops, including Tabor City, Wallace-Rose Hill, Hallsboro, West Columbus, South Columbus and Harrells Christian Academy.
Norman’s career coaching mark was a stellar 147-39-1, with three state NCHSAA championships and a perfect 16-0 mark in 2006 at Shelby. The Golden Lions also won 10 conference titles and five regional crowns under Norman.
Smith was a standout athlete at Lexington High School and played in the Shrine Bowl before going to the University of North Carolina, where he played football and ran track. Following graduation, he was a head football coach at Albemarle and Lexington before moving to the college ranks as an assistant at Florida State and then at North Carolina.
Strunk has been involved with high school athletics for almost 40 years, with his entire professional career involved with the media.
Winterton compiled an amazing record as a wrestling coach at Cary that has drawn both statewide and national attention. Winterton’s Cary grapplers won 11 North Carolina High School Athletic Association state tournament titles and eight dual team championships.
