North Rowan’s girls tennis team opened the season Monday with a 7-2 YVC win against South Stanly.
Catherine Crawford, Dakota Honeycutt, Daisey Lemke and Lacey Jones secured singles wins for North, and the Cavs swept doubles.

American Legion
The American Legion World Series heads into the final day of action today in Shelby, with three teams are still alive in the double-elimination event.
On Monday, Evan Dunn pitched a complete game as Nevada eliminated Michigan 7-1.
Minnesota scored six runs in the sixth and added six more in the seventh to bury Mississippi 14-4 by the 10-run rule.
Nevada plays Minnesota in today’s first game. The winner plays Mississippi for the championship.
Minor leagues
Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit his 23rd homer for Albuquerque on Monday.
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had a hit in each game as Winston-Salem swept a doubleheader from Lynchburg on Monday.
The Kannapolis Intimidators staged a dramatic rally to beat West Virginia 5-4 in Kannapolis on Monday.
Keenyn Walker’s two-out single in the ninth tied the game. Then Carlos Sanchez’s RBI single won it.
Trayce Thompson hit his 21st homer for the Intimidators.
China Grove practice
China Grove Middle School will begin football practice for grades 7-8 on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
Report to the field house at 5 p.m. for equipment and paper work. The team will be on the field for practice from 6-8 p.m.

Football registration
Registration for fall soccer and flag football continues at the Hurley YMCA.
These leagues are great introduction for soccer and football.
Coaches are always needed.

Youth football
The Salisbury 49ers will be registering football players and cheerleaders through Aug. 19 at Town Creek Park at 7 p.m.
Youngsters ages 5-12 are eligible and should bring birth certificates. Those with questions should contact Brian (Shorty) Miller at 704-754-1863.
Local football
The 5th annual “Saving Grace” Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament will be held at Corbin Hills on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
Team “Saving Grace” is hosting the tournament to raise money for research to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. The team was established in honor of 9-year-old Grace Hodge, who is one of at least 15 children in Rowan County that suffers from CF. The goal is to make CF stand for CURE FOUND.
All proceeds go directly to the CF Foundation; with over 90 cents of every dollar going to fund research.
The event is Captain’s Choice, $50 per person or $200 per team.
