Freshmen parent orientation: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today. This question-and-answer session is for parents only.
Freshmen orientation: 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday. Rising ninth-graders will receive their schedules and get bus information at this time. This three-hour orientation is for students only.
Schedule pickup: New students to A.L. Brown and upperclassmen (grades 10-12) can pick up schedules and bus information from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. through today. Scheduling errors can be addressed at this time.
Open house: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20. Parents will visit teachers in their studentís classrooms.
Grand opening of the S.T.E.M. Academy: 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 25.
Dress code: The new uniform policy at A.L. Brown High School requires that students wear pants, shorts and skirts made of a twill-like material (NO jeans or cargo pants).
Shirts/sweaters: green, white, gray or navy blue collared polo shirts, tucked in.
Bottoms: bottom wear (pants, shorts, skorts, skirts) colors will be black, navy blue, and khaki. Students are required to wear belts with any bottom wear that has belt loops.
Jackets: Jackets and coats with zippers or buttons will be permitted to be worn over the top of the short or long-sleeved polo shirt. Jackets or coats must be unzipped and unbuttoned while in the building.
Hoodies and sweatshirts: Hoodies and sweatshirts are not permitted.

Severe weather policy
The superintendent decides when students need to be dismissed from classes because of extreme heat, snow or ice, storms, water shortages or other unusual circumstances. When school is dismissed during the day, it will be announced on the area radio and television stations. In case of snow or other severe weather overnight, area radio and TV stations will be notified of school closings by 6:30 a.m. In cases when school is canceled or delayed, Kannapolis City Schools will send a ConnectEd message to all parents and staff.

Kindergarten through sixth grades: $4 instructional fee, $1 Cabarrus Arts fee, $5 agenda fee.
Seventh and eighth grades: $11 supply fee (supplies, agenda, Cabarrus Arts fees).
Ninth and 10th grade: Various fees depending on courses.
Insurance
School accident insurance is a low cost way to protect your children throughout the school year. There are several options to choose from.

Before and after school care
Cannon Memorial YMCA ń Kannapolis Branch provides a safe and fun before- and after- school environment for children.
Counselors provide guidance during activities which provide a healthy spirit, mind and body, including sports and games, devotions, arts and crafts, songs, group games, swimming days and daily snacks. Children also receive homework assistance.
The program provides opportunities and experiences which stimulate a childís physical, social, intellectual and emotional development.
Counselors are trained to teach your child the qualities essential to becoming successful, along with striving to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each child. The Kannapolis YMCA is a 4-star licensed facility and accepts subsidized childcare vouchers.
Hours
The before-school program opens at 6:30 a.m. The program is operated at the Y. Children are transported to school by Y mini buses and Kannapolis City School buses.
An onsite program is available at Forest Park Elementary School.
The Y provides transportation to the following schools: Forest Park, Jackson Park and Shady Brook Elementary schools. The school system provides transportation to the following schools: Fred L. Wilson Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Elementary, Kannapolis Intermediate and Kannapolis Middle schools.
Before-school program provided at the Y only and operates from 6:30 a.m. until school begins. Transportation to school is provided.
After-school programs operate from school dismissal until 6 p.m. at all sites.
A full day of childcare is offered on teacher workdays and certain holidays.
Costs
Monthly fees are as follows:
Before-school only: $100 for members, $150 for nonmembers;
After-school only: $225 for members; $340 for nonmembers;
Before and after school: $315 for members, $425 for nonmembers;
Registration fee is $30.
A 20-percent discount applies to second/additional child on monthly fees. Scholarship application and purchase of Care vouchers are accepted.
