Area sports briefs: Salisbury jayvees top East

Salisbury’s jayvee football team held off East Rowan 14-7 on Thursday at Ludwig Stadium.
The Hornets scored first when a pass from Riley Myers to Travon Ellis moved the ball to the East 1, and Ellis punched in for the score.
Tony Krider scored from the 3-yard line late in the first half after Salisbury executed on its two-minute drill.
Stephen Mazur added a pair of PATs for the Hornets, who won their sixth in a row, dating back to last season.
Jaquez Finger led Salisbury’s defense with an interception and two sacks, and the Hornets also got strong efforts from Jeffrey Burton, Antwuan Payne and Damek Bratcher.
East scored in the fourth quarter, but the Hornets recovered an onside kick to seal the victory.
Salisbury welcomes North Rowan to Ludwig Stadium next Thursday.

Prep volleyball
Davie beat Alexander Central 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 to improve to 3-0.

Local golf
Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot 68 in the first round of the Midwest Classic, a Nationwide Tour stop in Overland Park, Ks., on Thursday.
Gealy made three birdies and no bogeys and is five shots off the pace.
Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher finished second in the girls division of the TYGA Tournament held at Winston-Salem’s Pine Brook Country Club.
Rusher shot 72-77 — 149 to tie for first, but lost to Winston-Salem’s Kristi Ingram on the third playoff hole.
In the boys division, China Grove’s Davis Richards tied for 20th overall at Pine Brook, shooting 76-85 — 161. He was ninth in the 14-15 age group.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators whipped Hagerstown 12-4 on Thursday to expand their lead in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League to two games over Hagerstown and Hickory.
Phil Negus (4-0) was the winning pitcher. The Intimidators have won all of his nine starts.
Rob Wilson had three hits and three RBIs for the Intimidators.
The Intimidators will return to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in 2012 for the 18th consecutive year of SAL baseball in Kannapolis and the 12th season as the Intimidators.
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits for Winston-Salem in a 4-3 loss to Potomac on Thursday. He’s batting .245.
Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) singled in a run for Hudson Valley in Thursday’s 6-3 win against State College in the New York-Penn League. Lyerly is batting .277.
Pro football
Aundrae Allison (A.L. Brown) had one reception for 12 yards for Tampa Bay in Thursday’s 31-14 loss to New England.
College soccer
The Catawba women’s soccer team was picked fifth in the SAC preseason poll.
Sophomore Juliana Conte and senior Marissa DiMarco are on the preseason All-SAC second team.
Lenoir-Rhyne was picked to win the league.
The Catawba men’s soccer team was picked eighth in the SAC preseason poll.
Carson Smith was named to the preseason All-SAC first team. Domhnall Minogue and Corey Faughnan were second team picks.
Wingate was picked to win the league.
Woody Durham honored
The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced Thursday that Woody Durham, longtime voice of UNC football, has is the recipient of the organization’s Chris Schenkel Award for 2011.
Sign-ups
The Southern Rowan Sports League is having sign-ups on Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Linn Field, 600 North Meriah Street, in Landis.
This new league took over the Landis fields last fall and nearly doubled their numbers from their first season to their second.
There is a new T-ball field and other fields are upgraded.
Leagues are offered for boys and girls, ages 3-14.
