Event will promote well-being of dogs
Americans have embraced the joys of dog ownership for centuries, from George Washington and his American foxhounds to Barack Obama and his Portuguese water dog. Today, their roles in society have shifted from hunters and working dogs to primarily family companions.
Friends In Fur and The Salisbury Kennel Club, a member club of the American Kennel Club ó the nationís largest registry and leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of purebred dogs ó recognize that canine companionship is not only a right but also a privilege that must be respected and nurtured. In return for this privilege, dog owners need to respect reasonable, enforceable, non-discriminatory legislation governing the ownership of dogs, such as local leash laws, curbing policies and licensing regulations.
Each year the AKC hosts Responsible Dog Ownership Days in September to educate the dog-loving public about the importance of being a responsible owner. Nearly 600 AKC-affiliated clubs and other organizations around the country participate by holding events in their local communities throughout the month of September.
Whether you are looking to add a puppy to your family for the first time or are a lifelong dog lover, we encourage you to ěbone upî on responsible dog ownership. The Salisbury Kennel Club invites you to celebrate AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day with us on Sept. 24 at Dan Nicholas from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Weíll be offering a Canine Good Citizen Test, Meet the Breeds Fair and a host of fun and educational activities for dogs and owners.

Book will honor fallen soldiers
Please share the following with the members of your local community:
Anyone across the nation óincluding the people in your local area ó can remember a friend or loved one by submitting a brief memoir of a fallen soldier to be included in a special book, ěWe Will Never Forget: Personal accounts honoring our fallen soldiers.î I think the neatest aspect of this book is that it will be written by ěa proud nationî ń those people from across the country (and in your local area) who submit their memoirs.

Submissions will be compiled through Jan. 15, 2012. The book will be released on Memorial Day of 2012.
Proceeds from the book will be donated to the National Military Family Association to fund military spouse scholarships.
