The East Rowan girls tennis team remained undefeated with a 9-0 win against Statesville Tuesday.
East’s No. 1 singles player Lizzie Weaver became the first NPC player to defeat Ali Boggs in 7-6, 6-3 triumph.
Megan Bullins, Rebecca Agner, Kayela Wilson, Hannah Pressley and Lauren Thomas were all singles winners for the Mustangs.
Weaver/Bullins, Agner/Wilson and Pressley/Thomas teamed up to take doubles matches.
Prep football
Carson will play Hickory Ridge after all.
The Sept. 3 matchup, which was rained out, will be made up on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Hickory Ridge at 7 p.m.
Anyone who purchased a ticket can use it to get in. Cougar fans should wear Carson colors.
Local golf
Sixty-seven GARS members played at Lexington Country Club on Monday.
Low ‘A’ flight player with a net of 62.96 was Donald Martin.
Low ‘B’ flight player with a net of 65.68 was Boyce Caudle.
Low ‘C’ flight player with a net of 64.95 was Jim Harris.
Low ‘D’ flight player with a net of 63.15 was Vohn Peeler.
Jack Swicegood shot four strokes under his age.
Prep golf
East Rowan’s girls shot 130 at McCanless and won an NPC golf match with Statesville (143), West Rowan (147), North Iredell (157) and South Rowan (163) on Monday.
Emily Cleveland (42), Tabitha Warren (44) and Amy Carlton (44) scored for the Mustangs.
West scorers were Kayla Boley (42), Kristen Boley (50) and Kelley Boley (55).
South scorers were Alex Bare (51), Kristen Drye (54) and Ellen Coppley (58).
Salisbury participated in the match as a non-league member and shot 118.
Isabella Rusher (36), Brooke Smith (39) and Lily Yatawara (43) were the scorers for the Hornets.
Prep volleyball
The Carson volleyball team had its first NPC showdown with perennial power West Iredell on Tuesday and was quickly sent home with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 defeat. The loss dropped the Cougars to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
• West Davidson defeated Salisbury 3-1 Tuesday in the CCC opener for the Hornets.
Maddie Gentry lead the team in digs with eight and Brielle Blaire had a team-best five aces and eight blocks.
Salisbury’s JV team won 2-0.
• Davie County defeated Mt. Tabor 3-1 Tuesday in the CPC opener. Katrina Maine had a team-best 13 kills. The War Eagles moved to 8-2 overall.
Prep tennis
North Rowan defeated South Stanly 8-1 Tuesday in a YVC matchup.
Dakota Honeycutt, Veronica Leasure, Taylor Love, Daisy Lemke and Lacey Jones were singles winners for the Cavs, who moved to 5-3 in the conference.
Prep cross country
East Rowan’s boys had a perfect 15 in the pre-NPC meet Tuesday at West Iredell to finish first.
Cole Honeycutt, Brad Oden, Conor Honeycutt, Cal Meyers and Graham Lyerly finished 1-5 for the Mustangs, who had the top nine finishers. South Rowan came in second, led by Alex Reed’s 10th-place performance.
West Rowan’s girls won the meet by finishing with 49 points as a team.
Rebecca Parker (second), Ashlee McNabb (seventh), Mary McCachren (10th), Allison Baucom (11th) and Hannah Allison (19th) all had top-20 finishes for the Falcons.
East Rowan’s girls finished second with 69 points.
College volleyball
Catawba won its home opener 3-0 against Lenoir-Rhyne behind Kaitlyn Whitmer’s 17 kills Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Indians improved to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC.
College golf
Catawba freshman and Salisbury graduate Madison Kennedy finished fourth at the Anderson Invitational women’s golf tournament that concluded on Tuesday.
Kennedy shot a 155 with rounds of 77 and 78.
Tusculum won the team event by 14 shots against second-place Flagler.
Middle School football
West Rowan beat Corriher-Lipe 30-0 with 197 yards and four touchdowns from Javon Quarles. Armoni Houge, Brendon Westbrook and Kortez Weeks all converted two-point tries.
• North Rowan topped Erwin 30-0 Tuesday. North will play Southeast at home next week.
Middle School soccer
Sacred Heart won 3-1 against Salisbury Academy on Tuesday.
“It was definitely a frustrating game because we limited Salisbury Academy to only two shots on goal,” Sacred Heart coach Daniel Scullion said.
Sacred Heart went up 1-0 in the opening minutes after a call for an inadvertent handball in the box. Justin Boyd converted the PK.
James Boyd scored off a corner to extend the Dolphins’ lead to 2-0.
Salisbury Academy scored with less than one minute left in the first half off a perfectly executed set play on a corner from Matt Washko to the head of Sam McNeely.
Sacred Heart got the clinching goal in the second half from Justin Boyd on a free kick.
Jacob Crosby made nine saves for Salisbury Academy.
“We overplayed the strong side of the field and were not trusting one another defensively,” Salisbury Academy coach Tom Sexton said.
Middle School tennis
Knox defeated Mooresville 5-4.
Singles winners for the Trojans were Kathryn Rusher, Chloe McGee, Shelby Holden and Nellie Brown. Rusher-Brown won in doubles.
• Southeast’s girls beat West Rowan 8-1.
Singles winners were: Rachel Gunsch, Maggie Hollar, Brienne Leach, Samantha Liddle and Mackenzie Koontz.
Menius-Gunsch, Hollar-Liddle, and Leach-Koontz won doubles matches for the Patriots.
