Salisbury’s girls tennis team swept CCC foe East Davidson on Monday.
Salisbury (10-1, 4-0 CCC) got singles wins from Erika Nelson, Madeline Hoskins, Alexandra Drye, Caroline Graham, Jordan Pring and Meredith Hovis.
Nelson-Joy Loeblein, Hoskins-Katelyn Storey and Drye-Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer won in doubles.
Prep soccer
Carson lost to Statesville 6-1 in NPC play on Monday.
Isaias Guerrero converted a PK for the lone Carson goal.
Prep volleyball
Davie lost 25-16, 25-23, 6-25, 25-15 to McMichael on Monday.
College soccer
Jenna Bryan (Salisbury) has started each of Carson Newman’s matches as an outside defender. She had her first collegiate assist in Saturday’s 5-0 SAC win against Brevard.
College golf
Appalachian State’s Lauren Smith (Salisbury) shot 77 in the first round of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate on Monday.
Catawba athletics
Catawba’s men’s golf team placed sixth in the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic on Saturday.
Freshman Matt Hardman led Catawba with a fifth-place finish. He shot 76-68 — 144. His 68 tied for the tournament’s low round.
Catawba volleyball players Shay Meeks and Jenny Young were honored by the SAC after the Indians turned in a 3-0 week.
Meeks recorded 46 kills for SAC Player of the Week honors. Young is the SAC Specialist of the Week. The libero had 102 digs, including a school-record 55 against Tusculum.
Youth football
More than 30 participants took part in the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick local competition hosted by Salisbury Parks & Recreation on Sept. 11 at Catawba.
Age-group winners included Ally Young (girls, 8-9), Essence Sumner (girls, 10-11), Hayden Fann (boys, 6-7), Charlie Klinger (boys, 8-9), Mathew Messina (boys, 10-11), Austin Love (boys, 12-13) and Rodney Howell Jr. (boys, 14-15).
The winners advanced to to sectional competition at Catawba on Oct. 23. Sectional winners will compete at a Carolina Panthers game in December.
The Salisbury 49ers played three games against the Statesville Powercross on Sunday.
The 7-8 age group played to a 13-13 tie. The 49ers 9-10 age group won 21-6. The 11-12 age group lost 20-0.
Middle school softball
Erwin beat China Grove 11-0. Bree Medlin was the winning pitcher. She struck out five and walked none.
Meagan Kepley and Alissa Vanhoy led the defense for the Eagles.
Taylor Merritt had three hits, while Medlin and Kepley had two each.
Erwin (5-1) beat Corriher-Lipe 15-1. Medlin struck out six and walked two. Kepley had two hits.
Merritt, Kepley, Olivia Wilsey, Micah Furr and Madison Hunter led the defense.
