Catawba names coach

Catawba announced the hiring of Jason Bryan as the head coach for men’s and women’s cross country.
Bryan comes to Catawba from the College of Charleston where he has served as an assistant coach for the men’s team since August of 2012.
“We are very pleased to have Jason join our staff,” said Catawba AD Larry Leckonby. “He brings some excellent credentials to our program with experience at both the Division I and Division II levels.”
Bryan was a key recruiter for the College of Charleston and worked with all aspects of the program. During his tenure the Cougars produced their first all-conference runner in a decade and set school records for 800 meter, 1500 meter and 5k distances.
Carson’s Michael Morrison competed in the Battle of the Border Showcase at Appalachian State and went 6-for-10 with three triples and two doubles.
In the Dogwood State Junior Golf Championship in Lexington, East Rowan’s Logan Shuping shot a second-round 68 and is at even-par 142 after two rounds. He’s tied for 10th. Shuping made a double bogey but overcame it with five birdies.
South Rowan’s Davis Richards has shot 71-72 — 143. He’s tied for 15h at 1-over.
Concord’s Walker Cress has shot 67-72 — 139 and is third at 4-under.
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 2-1 to Hickory on Wednesday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
Kannapolis didn’t get a hit until Christian Stringer led off the ninth with a single through the right side. Jacob Morris had a run-scoring double in the ninth.
Hickory scored its runs in the first inning.
Kannapolis starter Robinson Leyer (5-8) took the loss despite limiting Hickory to two runs on five hits over six innings. Reliever Tyler Barnette allowed only one hit in three innings.
Catawba’s volleyball tem was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association with the Team Academic Award.
Teams must have a minimum of a 3.30 cumulative GPA to qualify for the award. Catawba joined five other schools from the South Atlantic Conference to be honored.
Mighty Kickers Fall Soccer is open to boys and girls, ages 3-4.
The Mighty Kickers league is a great introduction to the sport of soccer and teaches the fundamentals and rules of soccer along with YMCA values and principles.
