Brice ‘Al’ Wellmon, a Kannapolis native now living in Greensboro, sent this photograph of himself, far right, being taped up by his twin brothers Billy, left, and Willie, center, in preparation for the Second Annual YMCA Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Winston Salem. Wellmon, 77, thinks the tournament was in 1947 or 1948, when he was competing as ajunior flyweight. Wellmon said he only fought 26 times in his Golden Gloves career and won tournaments in Raleigh and High Point. The older twins were the real boxers in the family, he said, especially Willie, who won several championships. The twins are deceased now. Al Wellmon has two other surviving brothers, James and Joe, who live in China Grove.
