Bobby Cardelle scored two more goals as Salisbury’s soccer team cruised past CCC foe East Davidson 6-0 on Monday at Ludwig Stadium.
Kenny Bonilla, Lucas Capito, B.J. Woods and Tripp Caldwell also found the back of the net for the Hornets.
Cardelle, Woods, Emmy Turcios, Zachary Sukkasem and Philip Simons had assists for the fourth-ranked Hornets (17-1-1, 9-0 CCC).
Keepers Banks Fisher and Connor Miller combined for the shutout.
Central Davidson beat 14th-ranked West Davidson 1-0 and can still share the CCC title if it upsets the Hornets on Wednesday. The Spartans are 15-2-1 and 8-1 in the CCC. Salisbury won the first meeting of the teams 4-1 on Sept. 26.
Carson beat West Rowan 3-0 in NPC action on Monday.
David Garcia and Fidel Flores scored first-half goals for Carson on assists by Isaias Guerrero.
Garrett Owens scored in the second half for the Cougars, who are battling East Rowan for the league’s fourth and final playoff berth.
Carson (5-6 NPC) finishes the regular season at home against North Iredell on Wednesday. East (5-7) lost 3-0 to league-leading Statesville on Monday to wind up league play.
Prep tennis
Carson’s doubles team of Kelly Dulkoski-Hannah Shinn qualified at the Midwest Regional for the 3A state individual tournament in Burlington.
They are the first Cougars to qualify for the state event.
The Dulkoski-Shinn tandem went 17-2 during the regular season. Shinn, a senior, lost only one singles match this season and helped the Cougars finish second in the NPC.
Carson’s Haylee Hepler and freshman doubles partners Sara Lentz and Laura Isenhour also competed in the Midwest Regional.
Davie’s doubles team of Allie Billings-Jennifer Webster qualified for the upcoming 4A state individual championships in Raleigh.
First-round pairings for Salisbury, East Rowan, Carson, Davie and Gray Stone state qualifiers are in today’s Scoreboard.
The second round of the dual team state playoffs is set for today.
In 2A, Salisbury is at home against Brevard. In 3A, East Rowan is at Weddington. See Scoreboard.
Prep golf
East Rowan shot 330 and West Rowan shot 371 in the 3A Central Regional golf tournament held at Meadowlands in Winston-Salem on Monday.
Ledford (258), Northern Guilford, Cardinal Gibbons and Western Alamance were the four teams that advanced to the state event.
Statesville shot 319. Northern Guilford’s Taylor Penzer shot 77 for medalist honors. Complete individual results were not available.
Prep volleyball
Carson is at nemesis Charlotte Catholic in the second round of the 3A volleyball playoffs today.
The Cougars (21-10) are the only Rowan team still alive. See Scoreboard for SPC and NPC matchups.
Local golf
Seventy-one GARS members played at Warrior recently.
Low ‘A’ flight player with a net of 60.02 was Butch Adams.
Low ‘B’ flight player with a net of 61.92 was Dick Hatoway.
Low ‘C’ flight player with a net of 63.33 was Bobby Bryant.
Low ‘D’ flight player with a net of 62.60 was Johnny Graham.
Larry Luther made a hole-in-one on No. 3.
College football
SAC players of the week were Wingate kicker Paul Grammaticopoulos, Lenoir-Rhyne quarterback Major Herron and L-R defensive lineman B.J. Woodley.
Fifth-ranked Appalachian State expects to set an attendance record this Saturday when it hosts No. 1 Georgia Southern at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Reserved seats have been sold out for weeks and general admission grass seating is being snatched up at a record pace.
Last year’s homecoming crowd of 31,531 is currently the largest at ASU.
Prep basketball
A.L. Brown’s girls (6-2) wrapped up play in Carson’s summer league with victories against Mooresville and a shorthanded Carson squad.
College volleyball
Catawba’s Shay Meeks and Jordan Raye were named SAC volleyball players of the week.
Meeks had 49 kills in wins against Mars Hill and Tusculum. Raye had 103 assists. Catawba is 10-4 in the league and tied for second.
Livingstone’s volleyball team beat Johnson C. Smith 3-1 on Monday.
The Blue Bears (14-12, 7-7 CIAA) were paced by Phylicia Egbuna’s 19 kills and 11 digs. Iman Isom had 26 digs, while Natalia Felix had a career-high 38 assists.
Local gymnastics
Bree Tucker, 10, of Salisbury won the all-round competition in the state meet earlier this year.
She was first in the vault and parallel bars, second on the balance beam and fourth in the floor exercise.
She competed with Team North Carolina in the regionals in Tampa, Fla., and helped N.C. finish first.

Hurley YMCA programs
Registration continues for girls basketball and Little Shooters basketball at the J.F. Hurley YMCA.
Register through Saturday.
Little Shooters is for boys and girls ages 4-6. Players will learn sportsmanship, teamwork and basic fundamentals.
The girls basketball program is for ages 7-14 and teaches fundamentals and skills as well as YMCA values and principles.
