Two more area youths earn Leadership Scholarships
The Chick-fil-A National Leadership Scholarship has been awarded to Christina Black of China Grove and Daniel Gonzalez of Granite Quarry.
Franchise operator Bo Hawkins, of the restaurant located at Towne Creek Commons, presented the scholarships, making them the 26th and 27th team members from that location to receive the honor.
Black is studying cosmetology at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and Gonzalez is studying religion at Jacksonville Masterís Commission.
More than 55 years ago, Truett Cathy began the tradition of helping employees realize their college dreams by presenting a personal check to an employee. In 1973, the Leadership Scholarship program was created and continues today with $1.6 million committed this year to impact students across the country.

Shady BrookElementary receives grant for STEM lab
KANNAPOLIS ó Shady Brook Elementary School has received a grant from the Verizon Foundation to build a new STEM laboratory at the school.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Verizon awarded Shady Brook $8,500 to create a special classroom that will be devoted to STEM education.
The classroom will have microscopes, document cameras, laptops and other equipment provided by the grant.
The special lab will teach students about robotics, physical science, life science, communication and networking, machines, scientific reasoning, and more. It also will help students build strong skills in problem solving, team building and critical thinking.
ěWeíre extremely excited about this new grant,î said Shady Brookís Curriculum Coordinator Melissa Godfrey. ěItís so important to prepare our children for future success, and this lab will help us do that.
ěIt will make our science and math programs even stronger, and weíre very grateful to Verizon for giving us these additional resources.î
The lab will be completed by mid-November, and it will be available to all children at Shady Brook.
Shady Brook serves 372 students in kindergarten through fourth grades.
