Sacred Heart’s coed soccer team won the CCISAA tournament in Hickory to cap an undefeated season.
“It will be something our team will remember,” coach Daniel Scullion said. “It’s not every day you’re part of a team that finishes a season with a 100 percent record.”
The Dolphins (14-0) scored six unanswered goals in the second half for a 7-1 win against St. John’s in their semifinal game. Reilly Gokey and Pedro Cruz scored two goals each.
Justin Boyd, Annie Habeeb and Elena Turnbull also scored. It was Turnbull’s first goal of the season. Boyd, Arun Kelly-Rajan, Walker Latimer and Melvin Bonilla collected assists.
In the championship match against Hickory Christian, Sacred Heart won 1-0 in its toughest test. Rigo Salazar scored on a half-volley from the edge of the box five minutes into the game for the only score.
Sacred Heart’s Kelly-Rajan, Justin Boyd, James Boyd and Annie Habeeb were named to the 11-person league all-star team. Gokey was named tournament MVP.
Local golf
Local golfers Logan Shuping, Nick Lyerly, Bryson Sprinkle and Michael Childress played in the 10th North Carolina Middle School Championship played in Badin on Saturday.
Shuping, an eighth-grader, shot 81 and tied for 22nd. Lyerly, a seventh-grader, shot 83 and tied for 27th. Childress, a sixth-grader, shot 86 and tied for 36th. Sprinkle, a sixth-grader, shot 90 and finished 47th. John Freeman, an Asheville eighth-grader, won with a 68.
Pfeiffer’s Pro-Am golf tournament is set for Saturday, Oct. 29, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start at Badin Inn and Golf Club.
Cost is $50 per player and includes lunch.

Catawba athletics
Catawba’s volleyball team beat Carson-Newman 25-15, 21-25, 26-16, 25-20 on Saturday and moved into a tie for second in the SAC with Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum. The Indians (14-6, 8-4) got 19 kills from Kaitlyn Whitmer. Jordan Raye had 12 kills and handed out 40 assists.
Catawba’s men’s soccer team lost 1-0 to SAC rival Lincoln Memorial on Saturday in Tennessee. The Indians (6-8, 2-4) were out-shot 16-5 and managed only one shot on goal.
Catawba’s women’s soccer team beat Lincoln Memorial 1-0 Saturday on a goal by Athena Bless late in the second overtime. The Indians (4-8, 3-3) have won three straight.
Catawba’s men’s swim team won at Mars Hill Saturday 129-124. Theo Zatterstom won three individual events , while Andrew McCollister (Salisbury) won two. McCollister took the 1000 free (10:09.61) and 200 IM (2:02.84).
Catawba’s women’s swim team lost to the Lions 129.5-120.5. Katie Kruglov won three individual events for the Indians.
Prep cross country
Gray Stone Day School won the Stanly County Meet held at Albemarle’s Chuck Morehead Park. The Gray Stone boys earned the county title for the fifth year in a row, while the girls won for the third straight year.
Gray Stone’s boys had a score of 23. Stanly County Runner of the Year Quinten Parsons won in 19:42 on a rain-soaked course.
Gray Stone’s girls had a score of 24. Hunter Latimer won in 22:59 and was named Stanly County Runner of the Year for the fourth time in a row.
Prep football
Carson (3-5) will again try to make up its non-conference varsity football game at Hickory Ridge (3-5) tonight. Believe it or not, the weather forecast is promising for the 6 p.m. kickoff in Harrisburg. Gates open at 5 p.m.
Salisbury’s unbeaten jayvees play at home tonight against Lexington in a makeup game.
Prep volleyball
Volleyball conference tournaments start today. The most significant matchup is Statesville at South Rowan at 5 p.m. That one will determine the NPC’s No. 4 seed. The No. 4 team will make the 3A playoffs — barring monumental upsets in the tournament.
Prep tennis
Dual team tennis playoff pairings still weren’t available from the NCHSAA as of late Sunday, but Salisbury appears to be on the road Tuesday in the first round at the 1A/2A Northwest Conference’s top-seeded 2A team.
In 3A, East Rowan will be at home against the SPC runner-up. Carson should be on the road at the Northwestern No. 1 seed.
Middle school tennis
Salisbury Academy’s girls tennis team beat Sacred Heart 7-2. The strong Jaguars play at Charlotte Prep on Friday.
Hurley Y programs
