The Catawba College Department of Music will present its annual Service of Lessons and Carols in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel for the 24th consecutive year. The public is invited to attend on Thursday, Dec. 1.
This year, Justin Hazelgrove, Catawba’s director of choral music, is serving as artistic director and principal conductor.
Music heard at Lessons and Carols services at King’s College, Cambridge, England, where the service originated, will be featured. The service weaves carols of the season with scriptures or lessons relating to the story of Christmas from the prophecies to the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Selections include John Rutter’s “What sweeter music,” John Tavener’s “The Lamb,” and Mack Wilberg’s “Infant holy, infant lowly.”
“The audience will also take a role in this moving service through the singing of traditional Advent and Christmas hymns,” Hazelgrove says. Performers will include organist Matt Brown, the Catawba Singers and the Catawba Chamber Singers, the Catawba Community Music Children’s Choir, and the Catawba Wind Ensemble.
A prelude of Christmas music will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the Service of Lessons and Carols starting at 7 p.m. Shuttles to the service will be offered before and after the service. from the Robertson College-Community Center, Ketner Hall and Shuford Stadium parking lots on campus.
Tickets for the Dec. 1 performance, although free to the public, are required for all who plan to attend and requests are limited to up to four tickets per individual. Tickets will be available through the college beginning Monday, Nov. 7 by calling 704-637-4396 between 1 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Side by Side by Sondheim

La Fiesta de Rowan
The Salisbury Rowan Hispanic Coalition will hold their annual La Fiesta de Rowan at Knox Middle School, 1625 W. Park Road, on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. See Latino culture through music, dance, food and entertainment.
This event is designed to build bridges between cultures and educate the public about community services.

Big Chili Cookoff
Waterworks Visual Arts Center is having its annual Big Chili Cookoff fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 12 from 6:30-11 p.m.
Fifteen volunteer cooks will whip up their best chili, and guests will vote on the winner. Chili tasting will be 6:30-8 p.m., with the award presented at 8:30 p.m.
Proceeds support education and outreach programs at Waterworks.
Besides chili, there will also be dancing, mechanical bull-riding and calf-roping. Attire is casual.

Addison in ‘Annie’
LEXINGTON— Bevis Addison of Salisbury will be participating as a townsperson in the Lexington Youth Theatre fall production of “Annie.” Performances are Nov. 11-13 at the Edward C. Smith Civic Center, 217 South Main St., in downtown Lexington.

Pottery reception Friday
Mark of the Fire: Wood and Soda Fired Pottery by William Baker and Joy Tanner will open at Pottery 101 on Friday, Nov. 4, with a reception from 6-9 p.m. Music will be provided by Jack Burgess and Annie Griffey.
William and Joy, husband and wife, are studio potters who currently have their studios in Bakersville at the EnergyXChange, located in the mountains of North Carolina, one of the country’s model energy recovery projects. The mission of this unique project is to apply the use of renewable resources and practices for educational opportunities and economic development in the fields of art and horticulture.
The exhibit will be on display until Dec. 16.

Nov. 25 is Holiday Nite Out in Downtown Salisbury, and A Little Sumthin’ Sumthin’ is in search of singers who will spread the joy of the season during this special night out through the Little Sumthin’ Special caroling group, which will perform holiday songs in front of the boutique during the Night Out and continue spreading cheer at nursing homes, senior centers and more throughout the holidays.
No special talent needed, just a desire to help spread cheer through song during the period of Nov. 25-Dec 23.
