Want to make a studentís holiday season special? Nominate them for the Service Above Self Award Program! We need your help in submitting nominations! Students perform untold, and sometimes unrecognized, hours of service ó giving of themselves to help others. We need to show them we appreciate their helping others and the community by nominating them.
Each year, Service Above Self seeks nominations of individuals and groups in the divisions of elementary, middle and high school age noting their volunteer service to others. It is not too late ó the deadline for nominations is Nov. 15.
A ceremony recognizing all nominees will be held on Dec. 8 at the Keppel Auditorium at Catawba College. In addition, group and individual awards will be given in each age group for community service as judged by an independent panel of judges.

I have just heard of the proposed traffic circle at the intersection of Briggs, Barringer and Sherrillís Ford roads. While I do not currently live in West Rowan, it is the community in which I was raised, and I care deeply about both the community members and the land.
With Briggs and Barringer being connecting roads to major highways, this intersection gets very busy during the hours kids are going to and coming from school. I graduated from West Rowan High School in 2003, and I clearly remember the frustration of attempting to take a left off Briggs Road those early mornings. It is now eight years later, yet nothing has been done to aid drivers with the congestion. I am positive that with the growth of students at each of the three schools in the area the traffic is worse now than it was eight years ago.
A traffic circle is a solution for neighborhoods with lower speed limits, street lights and sidewalks. On a high-speed, poorly lit, country road, a traffic circle could be extremely dangerous, especially for cyclists and motorcyclists. It is not the solution for this intersection. This community deserves a stoplight at this intersection, no matter the difference in cost. The DOT needs to hear the communityís concerns about the traffic circle, and the community should demand a just solution, rather than a cost-effective solution. I urge you all to contact the DOT on this important issue and express your concerns.

Due to the major economical breakdown that our nation has faced, unfortunately many small cities are feeling a great impact. Downtown Kannapolis, known as ěCannon Village,î was once a thriving town with many businesses, and with the renovations of the streets and buildings, was like a smaller version of Charleston. The sidewalks were always full of people just strolling on a nice day or busy shopping in their favorite local business.
However, the town now seems almost like a ghost town, with only a few businesses left.
I feel that Roger Haas, Tom Kincaid and Ryan Dayvault will support the rebuilding and restoration of downtown Kannapolis. Therefore, I and my company, Lee & Danelle Clothing Warehouse, endorse and fully support these three candidates for Kannapolis City Council.
