Beck column: God works anonymously

The Book of Leviticus in Godís Holy Word was written by Moses while the Israelites were in the wilderness before they entered the Promised Land. Leviticus means ěrelated to the Levitesî who were from the tribe of Levi. It has been referred to as ěThe Priestís Manualî as Levites were to be the priests. The priests were to be ěHolyî which meant ěset apart ń reserved for Godís purpose.î In Leviticus 20:6, the Old Testament law says that God will set His face against the person who turns to and follows mediums or spiritists.
Leviticus 20:27 says that a medium or spiritist is to be put to death. I never knew much about this chapter until I started reading the study Bible my brother, Michael, gave me after my husbandís death. (There is definitely a lot I still donít know or understand just as there is all through the Bible.)
Out of curiosity I watched the TV show ěMediumî for awhile but like so many police shows, I soon tired of the violence. Do I believe there really are people that God uses like that? Iím not clear on all of that, although my husband used to think I could sometimes predict the future even though it was not my intent.
Off and on during my youth, I would read my horoscope hoping it would tell me something positive in my insecure days. As an adult after I turned to the Bible, I quit reading about my astrological sign. I didnít know anything about who writes this or where their ideas come from. I suppose I could do an in-depth study of Astrology but science was always my least favorite subject.
I was born on October 4 so my astrological sign is Libra which is shown as the Scale of Justice. My very nature (heart and soul) is in favor of fairness and justice for all.
I read the book ěThe Helpî and went to the movie. I saw circumstances and the world from othersí points of view. One of the earliest things I remember questioning my mother about were the two water coolers, one of which read: ěcolored.î In the 1950s, an African-American woman lived at our apartment on Long Street. My mother worked third shift at the mill and before I started school, she needed a sitter. We all thought a lot of this lady and I cannot imagine her ever being forbidden to use our bathroom, eat our food, or any of those things that were mentioned in the movie.
The only reason I am writing about this is because of a very sweet African-American lady who approached me recently at Subway at the chain store. She said as soon as she spotted me, she came over to tell me how much she enjoys my stories. She didnít think I would remember her. We used to go to the pool downtown at the same time of day and she also has multiple sclerosis. My daughter taught her daughter, who is now a junior in college. (How fast time moves!)
We chatted a few minutes and I asked her if she was the frightened lady that I tried to teach how to float. She laughed about how scared of water she was. I can remember talking softly and slowly, explaining how I had learned to float; she had laid back and let me hold her as she tried to relax. I never saw ěcolorî that day; I was able to relate because I had once been scared of water also.
By now you are probably wondering how Leviticus, a chance encounter and my belief about horoscopes comes together. Some friends and I have shared how as Christians we do not see coincidence; rather, we see God at work anonymously. I couldnít help but see God encouraging me when I opened the paper. His message to me read: ěDonít be surprised if it seems like everybodyís attention is focused on you. Because of the genuine concern you show for them, people canít help being drawn to you.î Several other people had commented on some recent stories and I could feel God using this tool to remind me that the stories he helps me write touch the lives of others I may never meet.
My friend the other Linda and I were discussing this story and decided a good way to end it would be the way we were taught when we were children. It goes like this:
ěJesus loves the little children; all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world.î
