LANDIS — James Furr, the challenger in the race for Landis mayor, is the apparent winner after winning two more votes in today’s canvass by the Rowan County Board of Elections
Furr, a current alderman in Landis, had been tied with current Mayor Dennis Brown, but two provisional ballots that hadn’t been counted until today both went to Furr, tipping the election his way.
The candidates finished the Nov. 8 election with 195 votes apiece. A machine recount Thursday put Brown up by one vote, but a hand recount by the Board of Elections on Monday found the two tied again at 195 votes.
If they had remained tied after the provisionals were counted, the winner could have been determined by drawing a name from a hat.
Furr did not attend the canvass today. Brown said he was disappointed but had enjoyed his time as mayor. He did not say whether he would ask for another recount.
