LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. ó Arizona State played an outstanding first half in beating Wake Forest. Sun Devils coach Herb Sendek was also very impressed with a consistent final 20 minutes of play.
Keala King had 25 points and Trent Lockett added 20 as Arizona State beat Wake Forest 84-56 in a consolation round game at the Old Spice Classic on Friday night.
Lockett had 14 points and King contributed 10 as Arizona State (2-3) took a commanding 40-21 lead at halftime. Consecutive layups by Kyle Cain and Lockett put Arizona State up 32-15 with 4 minutes left in the first half.
Wake Forest (3-2) got 17 points from C.J. Harris. He has scored in double-figures in all five games this season.
“We just couldn’t make a bucket,” said Wake Forest coach Jeff Bzdelik, whose team shot 34.6 percent from the field.
This was the first meeting between Wake Forest and Arizona State, which will close out the tournament Sunday against DePaul. Wake and Texas Tech, both 0-2 in the tourney, will also face off Sunday.Virginia Tech 59, Oklahoma St. 57
NEW YORK ó Virginia Tech was facing what was almost a must-win game in late November.
The Hokies had lost to No. 5 Syracuse in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off and were trying to hold on for a win in the third-place game over Oklahoma State.
Erick Green scored 18 points and Virginia Tech, despite not making a field goal over the final 61/2 minutes, beat Oklahoma State 59-57.
The Hokies (4-1) went 10 of 17 from the free throw line over the final 6:01 to hold off the Cowboys (3-2), who got within two points twice.
Virginia 68, Green Bay 42
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó Coach Tony Bennett got the best of his alma mater as Virginia ó behind Mike Scott’s 15 points and 10 rebounds and KT Harrell’s 14 points ó defeated Green Bay 68-42 Friday night.
Bennett, Green Bay’s all-time leading scorer, was coaching against the Phoenix for the first time. He helped lead Green Bay to its first NCAA Tournament in 1991 while playing under his father, Dick Bennett.
After struggling offensively in the recent Paradise Jam tournament, Virginia (5-1) came out smoking. The Cavaliers hit 10 of their first 15 shots and jumped out to a 27-7 lead.
Clemson 59, Furman 49
CLEMSON, S.C. ó Milton Jennings had career highs with 22 points and 14 rebounds as Clemson broke a two-game losing streak with a 59-49 victory over Furman.
The Tigers (3-2) had lost twice to in-state, mid-major programs at Littlejohn Coliseum in the past week and fell behind the Paladins 9-0 in this one. But the 6-foot-9 Jennings used his size and agility to help Clemson overtake Furman (3-2) in the second half.
Andre Young added 15 points for Clemson. Jennings surpassed his previous best of 16 points, last set in March against North Carolina.
Harvard 46, Fla. State 41
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas ó Brandyn Curry had six points, five assists, and five steals to help Harvard top No. 22 Florida State 46-41 in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The Seminoles (5-1) missed their first 15 shots. Michael Snaer led the way for Florida State with seven points.
The halftime score was 14-14.
Mississippi 64, Miami 61, OT
OXFORD, Miss. ó Mississippi edged Miami 64-61 in overtime.
Malcolm Grant led the Hurricanes (4-1) with 22 points, including 6 of 12 from 3-point range. Grant’s final 3-point shot pulled Miami within 62-61 with 21 seconds remaining in overtime.
Maryland 73, Florida Gulf Coast 67
COLLEGE PARK, Md. ó Terrell Stoglin scored 24 points, James Padgett fueled a decisive second-half run, and Maryland squeezed out a 73-67 victory over Florida Gulf Coast.
