Davieís boys suffered its first loss Friday in a 60-57 defeat against Ben L. Smith.
Caleb Martinís jumper with four seconds left pulled Davie (2-1) within 58-57, but Smithís JT Williams calmly hit two free throws and a halfcourt heave was off the mark as time expired.
ěIt was a great early-season test for us,î Davie coach Mike Absher said. ěItís good to be challenged like that early.î
Cody Martin scored 20 points to lead the War Eagles and Cody Martin added 13.

Catawbaís basketball teams are at home today against SAC rival Lincoln Memorial. The womenís game opens the doubleheader at 2 p.m.
Catawbaís teams dropped SAC openers at Carson-Newman on Wednesday. Both Lincoln Memorials squads opened with wins against Wingate.
The Catawba men (3-3) will rely on high-scoring sophomore Keon Moore, while the fourth-ranked Railsplitters (7-0) are paced by all-region performer Desmond Johnson.
The Catawba women (2-4) are led by Nisha Long (18.2 ppg) and Dana Hicks, who averages a double-double. Lincoln Memorialís women (4-3, 1-0) are sparked by Dayshalee Salaman (20.4 ppg).
n Livingstoneís men (3-0) are home tonight at 7 p.m. against Limestone.
Nasir Austin (17.3 ppg) leads the Blue Bears, who havenít played since they won at Limestone on Nov. 19.
Jarrell Douglass (21.9 ppg) is the big gun for the Saints.
n Livingstoneís women (2-5) will play in ěThe Ovenî at Queens this afternoon at 2 p.m. Kelcyn Manurs (18.3 ppg) will lead the Blue Bears against the Royals (1-5).

Taylor Martin scored 12 points for the Patriots, while Shanice Miller had 10.

West was led by Khalia Hall and Tatciana Cowan with eight points each. Peyton Greene collected 17 rebounds.
n Jayvee hoops
Sacred Heartís boys defeated Concordia 31-18 after jumping out to a 22-2 lead at halftime.
Michael Childress scored eight points to go along with three assists and five steals. Alex Antosek had seven points and four rebounds.
East Rowanís girls topped Mount Pleasant 48-24. Kaleigh Troutman scored 11 points for East while Amani Ajayi chipped in eight. Shelby Benge added seven and Alisha Beam scored six.
n Prep football
Northern Guilford defated Crest 31-7 in the 3AA state championship game Friday night in Chapel Hill. Northern won its second state crown in a row as T.J. Logan scored five touchdowns.
The Nighthawks rattled off 14 straight wins to close out the season.
Murphy defeated Jones County 21-6 for the state 1A title. The Bulldogs claimed their sixth championship.
Due to a data entry error, the NCHSAA listed East Davidson as a 3A school in its projected realignment plans, but the Golden Eagles will still be 2A.
n Keith Marshall, a Raleigh Millbrook running back, was named Gatorade Payer of the Year for North Carolina. He rushed for 1,891 yards and 25 TDs on 258 carries this season.
n Prep baseball
Northwest Cabarrus shortstop Corey Seager signed with South Carolina on Thursday.
Seager also projects as a high draft pick in June.
Northwest had 54 youngsters at its recent hitting camp that featured Seagerís older brother, Kyle, an infielder with the Seattle Mariners.
n Prep golf
Salisbury golfer Alex Nianouris was named second team All-State by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tarheel Youth Golf Association.
Salisburyís Isabella Rusher was a third team pick on the All-State girls squad.
n Prep swimming
Davieís boy swim team (2-1, 1-1 CPC) lost 85-84 to West Forsyth on Thursday.
Clint Holland won the 500 free in 5:07.5 in a thriller, and he also swam on a winning 400 free relay team.
n Davieís girls swim team (1-2, 0-2 CPC) lost to West Forsyth 90-76 on Thursday.
n Baseball camp
East Rowan is hosting a six-week baseball camp, starting Jan. 8.
