You never know when you might meet a new brother
You never know just when you will meet a brother ó or a sister, for that matter. I met a new brother on Tuesday at Ryanís.
I had just gotten the last little bit of cobbler when a laughing voice asked if I had stuck my finger in the cobbler. I turned around to see an older African-American gentleman with a yellow rose and holly pinned to his lapel. He was smiling, and we began to talk. Telling me of his life and of his two prosthetic legs, he always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye.
I told him he was a lot like my dad, who never met a stranger. He replied, ěWe never meet strangers, just other human beings, brothers and sisters.î
He said his name was Joe Louis Spears, named after the boxer.
Thank you, Mr. Spears, for a wonderful talk and for the yellow rose and holly. Praying we all meet someone like you.
