Area sports briefs: Livingstone loses road game

Livingstone’s men’s basketball team shot 55.9 percent but still lost 90-87 to Davis & Elkins in West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to shooting well, the Blue Bears committed only nine turnovers.
Livingstone (3-2) had a small rebounding advantage, but the game was decided at the foul line where the Blue Bears went 14-for-22 and Davis & Elkins shot 28-for-34.
Greg Henry and Nasir Austin scored 15 points each for Livingstone. Tyler Johnson (14), Omar Ford-Bey (13) and Mark Thomas (13) also scored in double digits for the Blue Bears. Austin led Livingstone on the boards with eight. Thomas hit four 3-pointers.
D’Quan Lynch scored a career-best 27 points for the Senators (3-4), while Ian Pinckney picked up 17 of his 24 points on free throws. P.J. Turner had 14 assists.
Livingstone won’t play again until it takes on Pfeiffer at New Trent Gym on Dec. 31.

Men’s college basketball
Jamel Carpenter (West Rowan) has been dismissed from the Fayetteville State team.
The preseason all-conference pick is still enrolled in classes at Fayetteville State.
Carpenter was the leading scorer in the CIAA in 2009-10. He averaged 17.7 points in the Broncos’ first three games this season.
Women’s college basketball
Livingstone’s women (3-5) play at Catawba (3-4) tonight at 7 p.m.n Freshman Ayana Avery (West Rowan) scored a season-high 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting in Radford’s 63-46 win against Wofford on Saturday.
Freshman Ashia Holmes (Salisbury) also played well for Radford. She had seven points, four rebounds and three assists in 17 minutes of action.
Avery and Holmes were the first two players off the bench for the Highlanders (5-3).
Rashonda Mayfield (West) is averaging 8.8 points and almost six rebounds per game for Voorhees. Mayfield has a chance to score 1,000 career points for the Tigers.
Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) grabbed four rebounds, but Gardner-Webb had a long Saturday at ranked Louisville, losing 92-27.
Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) has been cleared to play for Averett’s basketball team. She suffered a concussion late in the volleyball season.
Prep basketball
There are no games tonight involving local teams, but there’s plenty of action scheduled for Tuesday, including conference openers in the NPC and SPC.
In NPC openers, Carson is at East Rowan; Statesville is at West Rowan, and South Rowan is at West Iredell.
SPC openers include A.L. Brown at home against Robinson and Concord at Northwest Cabarrus.
In the YVC, North Rowan plays at home against East Montgomery.
Salisbury is off Tuesday. The Hornets will return to action on Wednesday when they host West Rowan.
Fans who want to see Davie’s strong boys team — sophomore twins Cody and Caleb Martin already have multiple ACC offers — can get a look at the War Eagles when they visit Carson on Thursday.
Prep wrestling
The Rowan County wrestling tournament is set for North Rowan this Saturday.
The Cavaliers are the defending champs.
North and East Rowan are off to very strong starts this season.
Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity girls lost to Community School of Davidson 35-28 in the championship game of the Paul Mendez Memorial Christmas Tournament.
Payton Russell scored 10 points for the Dolphins, while Annie Habeeb had six. Both made all-tournament. Covenant Christian beat Southlake Christian for third place.
Southlake Christian beat Sacred Heart 61-39 in the boys final.
Miles Monroe, son of former N.C. State star Rodney Monroe, scored 25 for Southlake.
Joseph Harrison had 21 points to lead the Dolphins. Spencer Storey hit two 3-pointers. Walker Latimer grabbed seven rebounds.
Storey, who hit five 3s in two games, and Harrison made the all-tournament team.
Paul Mendez’s sisters, and former Dolphin players Maria Mendez and Katie Washington were on hand to present awards.
The Dolphins play three more times at the “Tank” before Christmas. Next is a Thursday matchup with High Point Wesleyan.
