Rowan-Salisbury Schools Director of Transportation Judy Burris has recognized the following employees for exemplary service as bus drivers for December. A bus driver must adhere to all the duties and responsibilities set forth by the Rowan-Salisbury Schools Transportation Department and are nominated by their bus coordinator for this honor each month.

East Rowan rifle team takes first place in competition
GRANITE QUARRY ó The East Rowan High School Rifle Team traveled to Anson High to compete in a tri-county match earlier this month.
East Rowanís A team placed first overall with a cumulative score of 993.
The B and C teams placed second and third, respectively.
Amy Carlton was the top individual high firer with a 258 out of 300.
Thor Wright placed second with a 252, Alex Owens placed third with a 246 and David Harwood placed 4th with a 245.
Amy Carlton was the high team firer for A team with a score of 258. High team firer for B team was David Harwood with a 245. High team firer for C team was Samantha Gillepse with a 231, and the high team firer for D team was Bobby Clement with a 208.
A-Team consisted of Alex Owens, Thor Wright, Amy Carlton and Samuel Lakey.
Student chosenfor fashion weekcompetition
Charleston Fashion Week has chosen Savannah College of Art and Design student Hannah Goff, a resident of Lexington, N.C., to compete as a semifinalist in The Emerging Designer Competition: East during the 2012 Charleston Fashion Week, scheduled for March 20-24, 2012. Semifinalists will debut their fall 2012 collections as part of the event, which showcases fashion designers, models and entertainment.
The panel of fashion experts that selected the 20 semifinalists includes designers Mychael Knight, Lindsey Carter and K. Cooper Ray. Nationally renowned fashion experts Fern Mallis and Anne Slowey will return as Charleston Fashion panelists to select the 2012 Grand Prize Winner. The grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize, a $10,000 online marketing and promotional package from F22 Designs, a free runway show at Charleston Fashion Week 2013 and a professionally photographed look-book featuring their winning collection courtesy of J. The Emerging Designer Competition: East, presented by The Art Institute of Charleston, has been instrumental in helping young fashion designers break into the competitive industry. Past graduates of Charleston Fashion Week have gone on to grace the pages of Elle, Voguw, Marie Claire, Town & Country and WWD. Phi Theta Kappainductees
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College inducted 35 students into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at a recent ceremony.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 states and U.S. territories, and around the world. Phi Theta Kappa offers more than $36 million in scholarships each year.
ěPTK recognizes and encourages the academic achievement of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming,î said Karen Lynden, a business administration instructor for Rowan-Cabarrus, who serves as the collegeís PTK adviser.
Students must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for membership. Students also must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in a two-year college, with a 3.0 GPA.

Shive Elementary spelling bee
Eleven fifth-graders from Ethan H. Shive Elementary are the top spellers in their classes and participated in the annual Shive spelling bee on Dec. 14.
It was an exciting spelling bee as round after round was completed without any misspells. These students who spelled with extraordinary ease were Tristen Butler, Hunter Christy, C.T. Freeman, Callie Herring, Brailyn Irvin, Trevor Lyles, Haleigh Mitchell, Makenzie Pucci, Peyton Rowland, Vallie Vazquez and Savannah Winters.
After two final rounds, Hunter Christy won first place honors after spelling ěserenadeî and ěelegantî correctly. Trevor Lyles was second.
