Democratic Women to discuss health-care reform Aug. 15

The public is invited to attend the Democratic Women of Rowan County’s breakfast meeting at First Baptist Church at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 15. The meeting includes a discussion about current health care legislation under consideration in Congress.
Participants are asked to bring contributions of care package items for members of a U.S. Army battalion in Afghanistan. Items requested include snacks, candy, gum, magazines. Collected items will be delivered to Catawba College in support of an Office of Student Affairs service project for American troops.
Cost for the meeting includes $5 for breakfast and $8 for 2009 dues (if not already paid).
The church is at 223 N. Fulton St. in Salisbury. Enter the fellowship hall from the lower back parking lot.

Rowan County Literacy Council to hold tutor training workshop
The Rowan County Literacy Council will hold a four-session tutor training workshop starting Monday, Aug. 17, in the Stanback Auditorium of the Rowan Public Library.
The first session is from 7 until 9 p.m. and will cover the literacy program and the role of volunteer tutors in helping adults to read or learn English as a second language.
At the end of this orientation, participants will have the opportunity to sign up for the next three sessions to be held on Aug. 24 and 26 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Aug. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The registration fee for these three sessions is $20 to cover the cost of materials.
To be certified as a tutor, participants must attend all four sessions.
