Highway Patrol officials identified the victim in a fatal Tuesday morning crash on Sherrills Ford Road as Darrell Coy Misenheimer, 57, of Salisbury.
Trooper D.M. Morgan said Misenheimer’s Ford F-250 pickup was the only vehicle involved in the crash that occurred shortly after 9 a.m. in the 3500 block of Sherrills Ford Road.
Misenheimer, a former coach, had been a custodian and bus driver with Rowan-Salisbury School System since 2000, district officials said.
He coached from 1981 to 2000 at various schools including West Rowan and East Rowan High. Misenheimer also served as a substitute teacher.
The trooper said Misenheimer he ran off the road to the right and struck a mailbox. He overcorrected, crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left. His truck overturned and struck a tree. The truck came to rest under that tree. It appeared the truck may have hit a guy wire attached to a utility pole.
Morgan said he did not believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck. A report did not show speed was a factor. It’s not clear if Misenheimer had a medical condition.
A husband and wife, who asked not to be named, said they heard the crash from their home across the street. The couple heard a loud noise and looked out the front window to see the truck coming to rest.
“I told my wife to call 911,” the man said.
His wife said the crash was so loud she thought her husband was watching television.
Rowan County Rescue Squad and Locke Fire Department also responded.
