BOONE ó Residents of Rowan and Cabarrus counties have their own nights to see “Horn in the West,” the nation’s oldest outdoor Revolutionary War drama ó and they can do it at a discounted price.
Play organizers offer annual “county nights” on which residents can see the show for less than the usual cost. Rowan and Cabarrus residents can get discounted show tickets Friday through Sunday. With a valid identification, residents of the counties can buy their tickets for $8 each.
Every year, as summer returns to the Blue Ridge Mountains, so do the sounds of cannon fire, muskets, songs of joy and sorrow and native chants. All are part of the “Horn in the West.” The play is now in its 58th consecutive season at the historic Daniel Boone Amphitheater.
The drama follows a band of settlers led by Daniel Boone and the British Dr. Geoffrey Stuart as they head west toward dreams of a new life during the turmoil of the Revolutionary War. British aristocrats, brave mountain men and Native Americans fill the stage to give the audience a one-of-a-kind experience.
Before the show, visitors can tour the Hickory Ridge Homestead, the Horn’s own living history museum. The site includes authentic 18th Century log cabins with period furnishings and artifacts, as well as re-enactors who spin yarn, blacksmith, weave cloth and make corn-husk dolls. See the smoke house and the blacksmith’s shop, the 18th Century working full-sized loom and rustic wooden pig pen.
“Horn in the West” also offers “Dinners with Daniel” on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, an all-you-can-eat buffet-style dinner catered by the Daniel Boone Inn. Enjoy home-style cooking under shady oak trees and watch the wildlife play.
The show runs through Aug. 15. Shows perform Tuesday through Sunday nights at 8 p.m. and “Dinners with Daniel” begin at 6:30 p.m.
