Education – St. Matthew's Lutheran Church awards $19,000 in scholarships

St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church has awarded $19,000 in 2009-2010 scholarships.
Daniel James Agner, a graduate of East Rowan High School, received a renewed $1,000 scholarship. He is a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He completed an internship with the N.C. Department of Transportation and plans to major in civil engineering. He is the son of Rodney and Linda Agner of Salisbury.
Sarah Elizabeth Agner, a daughter of Rodney and Linda Agner, received a renewed scholarship of $1,000. A rising senior at UNCC, she plans to major in psychology and gerontology. A dean’s list student, she is involved in United Christian Fellowship, College Republicans and Sigma Kappa sorority.
Haley Ellen Barrier at 2009 graduate of East Rowan High School is a rising freshman at Duke University. She received a $1,000 scholarship. She was a member of Junior Civitan, Sigma Phi Gamma, SADD and the National Honor Society.
She was all-county and all-conference in softball at East. She participated in indoor track, where she ran in the state meet, and volleyball, making all-county.
She completed an internship at Rowan Family Physicians and worked at Country Garden Nursery. She attended Summer Ventures at East Carolina University; was voted most dedicated by the senior class; was a DAR Good Citizen; scholar athlete; Channel 9 Outstanding Graduate; AP Scholar with distinction; Robertson/National Merit Finalist; Rowan County Scholar and co-valedictorian. She was the state winner of the Law of Life Essay Contest on Courage.
She plans to major in English. Her parents are Lonnie and Lisa Barrier of Salisbury.
Hunter Barrier, an East Rowan graduate, received a renewed $1,000 scholarship. He is a rising sophomore at North Carolina State University, where he plans to major in horticultural science. He is the son of Lonnie and Lisa Barrier, as well.
Charity Buie Cape, a 2009 graduate of East Rowan High School, will be entering Independence University-CCHS as a sophomore. She received a renewed $1,000 scholarship. She plans to major in respiratory therapy. She is the daughter of Randall Buie of Salisbury and Phyllis Buie of Gold Hill.
Alexander Byrd, a graduate of North Rowan High School, will be a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received a renewed $1,000 scholarship. He participates in corner Campus Ministry and intramural sports. He plans to major in exercise and sports science. His parents are Julie and Jim Byrd of Salisbury.
Ashleigh Lauren Cline, a graduate of Concord High School, will enter N.C. State University. She was a member of the National Honor Society, a varsity cheerleader, a scholar athlete, and a junior marshal. She received a $1,000 scholarship. An elementary school volunteer, she plans to major in mathematics. Her parents are Sonja and Gary Cline of Concord.
Christa Renee Henrickson, a 2009 graduate of East Rowan, received $1000 scholarship. While at East, she was a member of the National Honor Society, honors chorus and secretary of SADD. She will be entering UNCC as a freshmen in the fall, where she plans to major in elementary education. Her mother is Renee McDaniel of Salisbury.
Sandra Burris Honeycutt, a graduate of East Rowan, received a renewed scholarship of $500. She will be attending Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in the fall and plans to earn an Associates Degree in Nursing. Sandra is married to Javin Honneycutt of Salisbury.
Dylan Kyle Holshouser, a graduate of East Rowan, received a renewed scholarship of $1000. He will be entering his junior year at Appalachian State University this fall where he majors in computer information systems. His parents are Dawn and Phil Holshouser of Salisbury.
Tyler Kent Holshouser, a graduate of East Rowan received a renewed scholarship of $1000. He will be entering his sophomore year at East Carolina University this fall where he majors in construction management. His parents are Dawn and Phil Holshouser of Salisbury.
Shelby Lauren Kesler, a graduate of East Rowan, received a $1000 scholarship. She was a member of the Junior Civitan, SADD, Student Council, and served on the yearbook staff She will be entering Meredith College as a freshman in the fall, and plans to major in fashion merchandising and design. Her parents are Anne and Kevin Blume of Gold Hill.
Katelynne Elizabeth Poole, a graduate of East Rowan, received a $1000 scholarship. She also was a member of the National Honor Society, Junior Civitan and the spanish club. She was also on the varsity volleyball team and the captain of her varsity basketball team as well as a member of the homecoming court. She will be entering Brevard College as a freshman in the fall and plans on majoring in health science. Her parents are Brian and Sandra Poole of Salisbury.
Carleigh Beth Simmons, a graduate of East Rowan, received a $1000 scholarship. She was a member of Junior Civitan and the National Honor Society. Carleigh was also an honor graduate and member of the homecoming court. She will be entering Appalachian State University in the fall as a freshmen and plans on majoring in food and nutrition. Her parents are Kay and Phil Simmons of Salisbury.
Courtney Simmons, a graduate of East Rowan, received a renewed scholarship of $1000. She will be entering her junior year at UNCG this fall where she majors in information systems and operations management. Courtney is a Dean’s List student and participates in 805 Christian Group. Her parents are Kay and Phil Simmons of Salisbury.
Brooke Nicole Stoner, a graduate of East Rowan, received a $1000 scholarship. She was Senior class president, a member of student council, National Honor Society, Sigma Phi Gamma, and Junior Civitan. She was also an All American Cheerleader and participated in Teens Westward Bound. Brooke will be entering East Carolina University as a freshmen in the fall, and plans on majoring in Nursing. Her parents are Michael and Teresa Stoner of Salisbury.
Jenna Trexler, a graduate of East Rowan, received a renewed scholarship on $1000. She will be entering her junior year at North Carolina State University where she majors in history and education. Her parents are James and Christina Trexler of Gold Hill.
Austin Alexander Waller, a graduate of North Rowan, received a $500 scholarship. He was a member of the marching band and JROTC. Austin is an Eagle Scout and a junior firefighter with the Union Volunteer Fire Department. He will be entering Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in the fall as a freshman where he plans to major in welding technology. His parents are Tony and Susan Waller of Salisbury.
Drew Christopher Waller, a graduate of North Rowan, received a renewed scholarship of $1000. He will be entering his Senior year at UNCC where he majors in mechanical engineering. His parents are Tony and Susan Waller of Salisbury.
Susan H. Waller, an honor graduate of East Rowan, received a renewed scholarship of $1000. She will be attending Pfeiffer University in the fall where she is a elementary education major. She is married to Tony Waller of Salisbury.
