Reynolds Scholarship
Suncica Dragas, a 2009 graduate of Salisbury High School, has received the John O. Reynolds Scholarship at Davidson College.
She is the daughter of Radenka and Rajko Dragas of Salisbury.
The scholarship, established in memory of the late John O. Reynolds III, is offered to a student from the Salisbury area who demonstrates academic excellence, commitment and leadership through involvement in school, community organizations and/or athletics.
Skills workshop
Alan Tucker, an adult basic education/GED instructor at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, received a scholarship and attended the Adult Basic Skills Professional Development Summer Institute held recently at Appalachian State University.
The program works with the North Carolina Community College System to provide adult educators with activities, such as workshops, training materials and the Summer Institute, which enhances teaching practices and adult learning.
This year’s institute focused on multimedia and technology. Tucker and other participants created multimedia presentations using video and audio files from the Internet, established social learning communities through the various existing technological social networks, and generated interactive programs for the adult learner.
Tucker, who earned a bachelor’s degree at UNC-Charlotte, will share what he learned at the summer institute with other faculty members in the pre-college studies programs in RCCC’s Continuing Education Division.
Pre-College Studies at RCCC includes Adult Basic Education classes in reading and math, GED preparation, English as a Second Language instruction and compensatory education for adults with intellectual disabilities. Classes are offered tuition-free and are held throughout the day in both Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

Agricultural award
Eric Corriher of South Rowan High School has received the 2009 DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award sponsored by Monsanto.Corriher is the son of Craig and Lori Corriher. He received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience. He has been an FFA officer, participated in agricultural mechanics, tool identification in the Envirothon, poultry judging and forestry teams. He was awarded one of the top Agricultural Experience Projects in North Carolina by creating a 5-acre wildlife refuge.
He received an academic letter from South and was named a Scholar Athlete. David Overcash and Laura Hoffner are his advisers.
