SilverArts brings out the finest of Rowan’s senior performers

The Clogged Up Cloggers claimed the gold medal in the Salisbury/Rowan SilverArts Performing Arts competition Friday afternoon at the Salisbury Civic Center.
As the top winners, Carol Cody and Ginger Tayler will represent Rowan County at the annual North Carolina Senior SilverArts finals to be held Sept. 21-27 in Raleigh.
The silver medal in the Salisbury/Rowan County SilverArts Performing Arts competition went to vocalist Dick Crane and the bronze to dancer Hazel Trexler-Campbell. Other competitors included “Southern Bell,” a comedy/drama by Carol Lee; Music Makers Combo, consisting of vocalists Libby and Clyde Young, Charlie Reese and Brad Gulley; “Twinkle,” an instrumental by Mikal Barnes; and “Just Me” by vocalist C. William French.
More than 30 Rowan County artists qualified for the North Carolina Senior SilverArts finals after award-winning performances, exhibits and entries last Wednesday through Friday. Salisbury/Rowan SilverArts is sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games and is part of a statewide network of 54 local games for all 100 counties.
Judges were: Performing Arts ó Dr. Jim Epperson, Dr. Karl E. Hales and C.K. Wyatt; Literary Arts ó Deal Safrit; Visual Arts ó Sarah V. Leonard; and Heritage Arts ó Lori Eberly, Joan Zimmerman, Sue Misenheimer and Ann Miller.
Entertainment for the competition was provided by Music Makers Combo, Bill French and Peanut Lambert and The SilverLiners. Rowan County’s North Carolina Senior Games Ambassadors are Betty and Bob Goodwin, C. William French and George W. Kluttz.
A nonprofit organization, Salisbury/Rowan SilverArts is dedicated to providing year-round health promotion and education for adults 55 years of age and older. Sponsors include: Gold Level ó Comfort Keepers of Salisbury and Genesis HealthCare; Silver Level ó Cheerwine and Humana; and Bronze Level ó Jake Alexander Auto Sales, Rowan County Arts Council and Rowan Regional Medical Center.
