kchaffin@salisburypost.comThe Rowan County Board of Social Services is looking for people interested in serving a three-year term beginning July 1.
The term of the board chairman, Dr. Nilous Avery, will expire June 30. Avery was appointed to the board in October 2002 to complete the unexpired term of Marjorie Kinard, who resigned due to increasing work commitments, and was appointed to two additional, three-year terms.
Of the five members of the board, two are appointed by the Rowan County Board of Commissioners, two by the N.C. Social Services Commission and the fifth by the other four members. Avery fills the fifth seat on the board, and his replacement will be appointed by fellow members Carl Ford, chairman of the Rowan County Board of Commissioners, Jim Sides, Lillian Morgan and John Blair.
A booklet titled, “Serving on the County Board of Social Services,” written by John Saxon of the Institute of Government, is available for those interested in serving. The booklet, additional information and a nomination form can be obtained from any current board member or Social Services Director Sandra Wilkes, who serves as secretary to the board.
Information and the nomination form can also be found on the county Web site at www.co.rowan.nc.us (click on Social Services). Nomination forms should be submitted to Wilkes no later than June 17.
Ford, Sides, Morgan and Blair will review all nominations at their next meeting on Tuesday, June 23, and appoint someone to replace Avery.
