A Spencer alderman has asked the Rowan County Board of Commissioners to rename a section of Julian Road for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
During public comment at the board’s meeting Monday, Jeff Morris asked commissioners to extend the city’s new Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue to Interstate 85. That would require renaming the section of Julian Road that extends from Jake Alexander Boulevard to I-85.
Morris said that would allow “Rowan County to have a MLK exit on the freeway.”
The city of Salisbury considered the name change on Julian but opted to stop at Jake Alexander Boulevard.
Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation declaring Jan. 19 as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Rowan County.
Jan. 19 is a federal, state and county holiday.
Several commissioners will attend various events to honor King on Jan. 19.
The events include:
– The Salisbury-Rowan Human Relations Council will host the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Breakfast at the Cornerstone Church Events Center, 315 Webb Road.
The meal is at 7:30 a.m., with the program starting at 8 a.m. Tickets are $7 each.
– All five commissioners plan to ride in the MLK Day parade in downtown Salisbury, which is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
Due to the holiday and the closing of county offices, commissioners moved their second Monday meeting to Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
