The Seattle Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers 14-12 on Monday night on a final play filled with controversy.
With the Seahawks trailing 12-7, Russell Wilson threw a TD pass to Golden Tate on the final play of the game.
Local golf
The team of David Dorsett, Michael Dorsett, Keith Dorsett and Jim Hill shot 52 (20-under) and won the First Flight in the Gene Auten American Legion Classic played at Corbin Hills.
The team of Susan Morris, Ronnie Eidson, Phyllis Gurland and Wayne Kennerly shot 61 and won the Second Flight in a scorecard playoff with the team of Joe Antosek, Lou Antosek, Pete Kuld and Mechelle Kuld.
The team of Beth Calhoun, Toni Iossi, Beverly Cobb and Treva Honeycutt won the Third Flight.
Perry Voncanon won longest putt on No. 9. Calhoun won closest to the pin on No. 5, while Phil Cauble won closest to the pin on No. 16.
? Rockwell’s C.P. Fisher, 93 years young, shot a stroke better than his age at McCanless on Monday. Fisher’s 92 came while playing with son-in-law Woodrow Frick and Skip Augustson.
Fisher will turn 94 in October, giving him a little more leeway in shooting his age.
? The McCanless Couples played a four-man Texas Scramble on Sunday.
The team of Frank Foster, Ty Cobb, Bev Cobb and Treva Honeycutt finished first.
The team of Susan Houston, Sharon Miller, Tim Earnhardt and Bryan Reynolds finished second.
Reynolds won the longest putt hole. Bob Ingram won closest to the pin.
Prep soccer
Salisbury’s boys soccer team won 4-2 against Central Davidson in a CCC match on Monday.
Emmy Turcios, Miguel Urbina, Michael Brown and Bobby Cardelle scored goals for the Hornets.
Turcios, Cardelle, Philip Simons and Zach Sukkasem had the assists for the Hornets (7-2-1, 1-1). Salisbury lost its CCC opener to West Davidson.
? Salisbury won the jayvee game 2-1 against Central, with Bryan Fragoso and Semir Salcinovic scoring goals.
Salisbury is at Lexington on Wednesday.
Prep golf
Statesville won Monday’s NPC girls golf match at Warrior.
The Greyhounds, led by Evelyn Stein’s 36, shot 140.
West Rowan shot 141 for second place. Kayla Boley had a 43, Kelly Boley shot 46, and Neely Holloway shot 52.
East Rowan was third at 143. Scorers were Emily Cleveland (47), Kathrine Marcum (48) and Grace Stokes (48).
Carson was fourth at 146. Adison Collins (45) and Katlyn Smith (49) led the Cougars. Amber Reeder and Alisha Sears shot 52s.
South Rowan’s Whitney Parks shot 52.
The Falcons still lead the season competition by seven shots over East Rowan and by 11 over Statesville.
Salisbury played and shot 112. Isabella Rusher shot 33, Grace Yatawara carded a 38, and Madeline Hoskins shot 41.
Prep football
In the CarolinaPreps.com top 10, Butler (4A), Northern Guilford (3A), Tarboro (2A) and Swain County (1A) are ranked No. 1.
In 3A, Concord is fifth, A.L. Brown is sixth, Statesville is seventh, and West Rowan is eighth. In 2A, Salisbury received votes. In 1A, Albemarle is ranked sixth and North Rowan is ranked seventh.

Prep tennis
Salisbury rolled to a 9-0 win against Central Davidson in a CCC match on Monday.
Katelyn Storey, Alexandra Drye, Anna Flynn, Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer, Kayla Honeycutt and Kathryn Rusher posted singles wins.
Doubles winners were Storey-Flynn, Drye-Meyerhoeffer and Rusher-Grace Steinman.
The Hornets (13-2, 6-0) have won 120 straight CCC matches.
? Davie lost 5-4 to Mount Tabor in a CPC match on Monday.
Nadia Gregory, Allie Billngs, Jennifer Webster and Ashley Dowell won singles matches for the War Eagles.
Prep cross country
North Rowan is the host for the Rowan County Track Meet at Dan Nicholas Park on Wednesday.
The boys championship race is at 3:45 p.m. The girls championship race is at 4:30.

Prep Volleyball
Carson won 25-20, 25-23 and 25-11 at Lake Norman and topped Wheatmore 25-18, 25-7 and 25-13 in a match played at Lake Norman.
Carson hosts Central Davidson on Wednesday.
? The Cabarrus Stallions won 3-0 against North Hills.
Emily Messisco had nine digs. Anna Messisco served nine aces and had eight kills. Karley Long had three blocks.
Catawba athletics
Catawba’s first regional-championship baseball team was honored at halftime of Saturday’s football game against Tusculum.
? Catawba’s volleyball team fell to Armstrong Atlantic in five sets. Carson Brewer had 13 kills and seven digs for the Indians.
Catawba’s Kaitlyn Whitmer was named SAC Player of the Week. Catawba setter Jordan Raye was named SAC Specialist of the Week.
? Catawba’s Olivia Myers ran 20:32 at the 5K Bulldog Stampede at Wingate. Myers finished 10th and led Catawba to a fifth-place finish.
? Catawba’s Cristian Crifasi ran 27:14 in on an 8k course at the Bulldog Stampede and finished fifth. He led Catawba to a third-place finish.
? Taylor Arrowood’s goal lifted Catawba’s women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win against Newberry at Frock Field. Catawba is 4-4 and 1-2 in the SAC.
? Catawba’s men’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie with Newberry. Luke Kooyman scored for the Indians (3-2-3, 0-0-3). Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) made two saves.
Catawba hosts Chowan at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
College football
Appalachian State linebacker Bryan Grier was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
? Wingate’s Richie Kazazian was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Kazazian not only recovered three fumbles against Brevard, he returned them for 117 yards and a TD.
Middle school tennis
Salisbury Academy’s girls won 8-1 against Sacred Heart.
Juliana Anderson, Annabel Barr, Ivy Overcash, Jordan McCall and Samantha Pritchard won in singles for the Jaguars.
Maria Capito-Barr, Overcash-Anderson and McCall-Ruth Clement swept doubles.
Carolyn Conway won a singles match for Sacred Heart.
Middle school softball
West Rowan Middle won 12-0 against North Rowan Middle on Monday.
Khara Fesperman struck out 10 and pitched a one-hitter for the Bulldogs.
Fesperman, Katie Williams, Mandi Timmerman, Lindsey VonCanon and Victoria Moore paced the offense.
West plays China Grove today.
Middle school soccer
Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer team won 15-0 against St. John’s.
Sacred Heart had only 10 players but took a 15-0 lead at halftime.
Will Taylor had a hat trick. Eric Turnbull, Michael Childress, Rigo Salazar, Jack Fisher and Anne Marie Metz scored twice. Melvyn Bonilla and Justin Boyd scored a goal each. Bonilla and Taylor led in assists with two each. Turnbull, Childress, Metz, Josh Faulkner, Adam Habeeb and William Austin had one each.
