SALISBURY — For a lot of people, the weekends are for finally getting around to doing some much needed chores around the house. It can be something as simple as mowing the lawn or catching up on laundry, but for those with handiwork expertise, it could mean fixing a shelf, unclogging a drain or remodeling the bathroom.

Lowe’s Home Improvement knows plenty about those DIY tasks and they have organized a way for kids to help their parents out.

On Jan. 20, Lowe’s held a nationwide “Kids’ DIY-U Workshop” for kids ages 5-12 where red vest expert associates “who bring years of DIY knowledge to every project” guide them on how to make “My First DIY Toolbox.” Lowe’s has five monthly workshops, but only one of them is for kids.

“It’s for the next generation of DIYers. They learn DIY skills and techniques that instill confidence,” Lowe’s Assistant Manager Rebecca Ancheta said. “It will have your little helper eager to tag along on your next home improvement project.”

At the Lowe’s located in Salisbury, employees guided kids on how to hammer a nail and gave other DIY tips on making their very own toolbox that they were allowed to keep at the end of the lesson.

Lowe’s had tables and supplies set up towards the back of the store so kids who were shopping with their parents could take a few minutes to test out their construction capabilities.

“It really does get the kids engaged and it gets the parents engaged, too. They leave happy and they have stuff to take home with them to remind them to come back,” Ancheta said.

Seth Yates brought his three kids to Lowe’s for a Saturday trip and after one of the employees told him about the workshop, he was eager to let them take part in it.

“We thought it was fun! The kids loved it!” Yates said.

The next kids workshop at Lowe’s will take place on Feb. 10.
