CHINA GROVE — Rowan Public Library (RPL) will be hosting FeedNC, a non-profit organization based in Mooresville, as its food truck will be parked at the Frank T. Tadlock South Rowan Regional Library in China Grove during select Friday afternoons in August.
On Aug. 9, 16 and 23, the food truck will park in the library’s lot to provide free groceries to visitors from 1:30-3 p.m. or until all groceries are claimed.
According to information shared on the FeedNC.org website, North Carolina has the eighth highest rate of food insecurity in the nation. People struggling with low food security often must make tough choices about the amount and quality of food they procure for themselves and their families, meaning many folks will opt to skip meals, eat less or eat lower-quality foods to make ends meet. FeedNC aims to fill those gaps by creating connections to food, education and resources as a catalyst for change.
To promote food security in the community, FeedNC will be giving out groceries from its food truck.
There is no charge for the food; FeedNC simply requests that participants complete a brief demographics survey. The survey information will be used for the organization’s database and will allow FeedNC to connect participants with community resources that best fit their needs.
Brianne Mack-Bingham, program coordinator for agriculture and sustainability for FeedNC, is excited for the food truck to visit the southern portion of Rowan County. One of her favorite aspects of the program is connecting with the individuals who visit the food truck.
“It’s special to hand someone a bag of groceries knowing you helped relieve at least a fraction of their stress regarding food insecurity before the weekend,” said Mack-Bingham.
In addition to getting groceries, food truck participants are invited to visit the library, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays.
