SALISBURY — The Salisbury Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) hosted Black HERstory, STAMPED on Feb. 10 at Rowan Public Library with featured presenter, Dr. Mary Love.
As AAUW endeavors to celebrate women in leadership, Love’s extensive collection of African Americans on United States postage stamps, showcased every African American woman featured in a stamp collective series while providing biographical sketches and noting the significant contributions of these individuals. From Harriet Tubman to Constance Baker Motley, with Love’s guidance, all assembled recognized stamp collecting is unlimited as it is educational and can open doors to languages, people, historical events, sports, nature and more.
“Stamps issued by USPS and postal systems of the world often honor the heritage of people of color and their various unique cultural signatures,” Love said. “Stamps may be merely seen as small pieces of insignificant paper, but they really serve as artistic works that convey history as they help move the mail from one place to another.”
As the attendees shared and acquired knowledge of the featured women, Dr. Love led audience members in an originally composed Black Women Litany that was filled with acknowledgement, uplift and celebration.
“Dr. Love’s presentations are always the essence of exceptionality,” branch President Dr. Da’Tarvia Parrish said. “The magnitude of this genius message manifested in stamps is motivational and has the ability to promote movement.”
Thorough in presentations, Love, who is an adjunct professor at Hood Theological Seminary, left audiences with a detailed stamp brochure to share and inspire.
