The National Weather Service office in Raleigh has issued a winter storm watch that will be in effect from Wednesday morning, Feb. 19, through Thursday morning.

According to the NWS, “heavy, mixed precipitation is possible, with total snow and sleet accumulations between one and six inches.” The greatest accumulations are expected close to the N.C. and Virginia border. Ice accumulation of up to 2/10 of an inch is possible, with the greatest accumulation anticipated along and south of the U.S. 64 corridor.

However, the weather called for in Rowan County is slightly milder. On Wednesday, snow showers are likely early with sleet and freezing rain likely in the afternoon. A light snow accumulation possible with near steady temperatures in the lower 30s. The chance of precipitation is about 70 percent.

On Wednesday night, there is a chance of snow showers and sleet in the evening with little or no additional snow accumulation. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 20s and the chance of precipitation is about 50 percent.

By Thursday morning, the skies are expected to be partly sunny then clearing with high temperatures in the mid 30s.

In the Piedmont area, more challenging driving conditions should be expected, including slippery roads. Hazardous road conditions are expected to impact both morning and evening commutes Wednesday and potentially Thursday morning’s commute.

Precipitation is expected to be primarily a mixture of snow and sleet with a relatively short period of freezing rain.

NWS encourages residents and anyone planning to visit the Piedmont area to monitor forecasts for updates and to consider delaying all travel.

“Motorists should consider using extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.”
