College baseball: Indians rally to beat No. 8 Mount Olive

SALISBURY — Catawba’s baseball team pitched “Staff” on Tuesday against eighth-ranked Mount Olive (19-9) and was able to pull out a 5-2 victory in front of 165 fans at Newman Park.
Nine Catawba pitchers trotted to the mound. Trace Aufderhar III pitched the top of the eighth with 19th-ranked Catawba trailing 2-1 and was credited with the win when the Indians scored four times in the bottom of the inning. Hayden Simmerson (Carson) handled the ninth for his seventh save.
Catawba (20-7) trailed 2-0 in the sixth when Sam Hunter homered to get the Indians on the scoreboard.
Cole Hales (Carson) and Cameron Burleyson (Carson) had hits to start the winning rally in the eighth. Hunter Atkins singled for a 2-all tie. Ty Hubbard (South Rowan) knocked in the go-ahead run with a double. Dylan Driver (Carson) plated two more insurance runs with a double.
