SALISBURY — The Salisbury City Council approved the implementation of an all-way stop sign at the intersection of West Henderson Street and Confederate Avenue on Tuesday.
The implementation of a four-way stop sign at the intersection is not a new discussion, with Mayor Tamara Sheffield saying that the council has talked “off and on over the years” about Confederate Avenue.
The request came from Salisbury Traffic Engineer Victoria Trexler, who said that the intersection warranted an all-way stop due to a high number of crashes there, with eight crashes in the past 36 months that could have been corrected with a stop sign, which include T-bone and left-turning conflict crashes.
The lowered sight distance on Confederate Avenue was also cited by Trexler as a condition warranting an all-way stop.
Council Member David Post said that the intersection was dangerous not just because of the intersection, but also because of that curve to the east on Confederate Avenue.
“It’s hard to see coming around that curve and that’s more difficult than that intersection. Because, my hunch is, I don’t know which way those crashes were coming from, but I bet you many times the car was coming from the east and heading west and hitting somebody trying to cross over Henderson, that would be my bet,” said Post.
After the discussion, the members of the city council unanimously voted to approve implementing an all-way stop at the intersection.
Trexler did make sure to note that stop signs are not considered a traffic calming measure, instead being traffic control, and so could not be requested under the city’s new traffic calming policy.
