The Fulton Heights Neighborhood Association invites the community to a free concert featuring nationally-known mountain dulcimer musician Sam Edelston. The concert is scheduled for April 13, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Centennial Park (Wiley Avenue).
Attendees are advised to bring their own chairs or blankets. In case of rain, the concert will be held at Haven Lutheran Church at 207 W. Harrison Street, courtesy of Art and Soul Rowan. Edelston is represented by Big Gig Artists.
Edelston was first a finger-style guitarist and for years didn’t think the dulcimer could match the guitar’s complete sound. Then one day, he sat down with one and soon found himself playing a ‘70s rock song and began to see the dulcimer’s potential as boundless. Now his primary instrument, it has taken him across 12 states to perform and teach. His reach extends even further through his viral YouTube performances, where he has reimagined rock anthems, contemporary pop songs, Tin Pan Alley classics and more. He does also play some expected repertoire of a traditional Appalachian-based instrument, but just as “the Folk” played the music that was around them, the music that was around him also included opera, bossa nova, and bluegrass — always aiming to make them sound as if perhaps they might have been written for the dulcimer. As he told an audience of Beatles fans at FabFest Charlotte three years ago, “I believe dulcimers belong Here, There, and Everywhere — and maybe someday Across the Universe.”
