Staff report
ASHEVILLE — Former West Rowan star Abigail Wilson played a lot of basketball for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs — appearing in 148 games in five seasons.
The universal COVID redshirt for the 2020-21 season — Wilson’s freshman year — allowed her to play a fifth season, and the mechanical engineering major made the most of it. She got to play 30 minutes per game this season, a career high by a lot, and she had, by far, her best statistical season.
Wilson, a 5-foot-11 forward, adjusted quickly to college basketball and played in 23 of the Bulldogs’ 31 games as a freshman. She started most of the time throughout her career.
Wilson’s first four seasons were similar, as she averaged between 4.6 and 5.6 points and between 3.8 and 4.4 rebounds per game.
In her fifth season, she bumped those numbers up to 10.3 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game.
She scored 910 points in her career, with 319 this season. She had 184 rebounds this season and finished with 661 for 11th on the Bulldogs’ all-time list.
Wilson’s last game was in UNC Asheville’s loss to High Point in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Tournament. She scored 10 points.
She had a career game in January against High Point with 17 points.
Wilson is the all-time leading scorer for girls basketball at West Rowan. She scored 2,191 points for the Falcons.
