Letter: America is changing

America is changing and I am concerned.
I am concerned that Elon Musk, who was not elected, is making important decisions for each of us and our country. He, along with President Trump, have taken it upon themselves to dismantle the trusted departments and agencies that actually help people. This is in the guise of saving money for the country.
President Trump has signed an executive order to close the Department of Education. This action puts our children’s education and basic needs at risk. These cuts affect not only curriculum but impact school lunches, future of special-ed programs and access to student loans. Moving this important department to the states does not promote equality. The quality of education should not depend on your zip code.
Also, do not forget that Elon Musk has been given access to our personal information such as our social security information. This is the program he has called a Ponzi scheme and is eyeing how he will plan its future. Seniors depend on these benefits for survival and have paid into the system throughout their lives. Social Security and Medicaid are life saving and must be preserved. Already, Social Security offices are scheduled for closure along with phone access to benefit information. Communicating only through the internet will make it difficult for many seniors.
USAID is an agency that offers aid to countries in poverty and during disasters is scheduled for closure. This program supplies food, medicine, clean water and support to over 100 countries. It also benefits the United States in recognizing us as a humanitarian country that can be trusted upon when there is a need. Many other departments and agencies that we rely on are targeted for closure affecting air safety, health and our defense.
Yes, America is changing . Some may like the changes. But we cannot let one administration interrupt our democracy. Let’s begin by voicing our opinions to our elected officials that we want a country where the people make the decisions for their country and not the billionaires. I am concerned and I hope you are.
