High school baseball roundup: Koontz stars as Falcons spank Spiders

CONCORD — Ben Koontz had the game of a lifetime on Friday as West Rowan slaughtered Concord 16-1 in South Piedmont Conference action.

Koontz slugged two homers and a double and drove in seven runs — and did it in five innings. His season had been pretty quiet before Friday.

While Koontz led a 15-hit assault on the Spiders, Brody Pope also turned in an epic game. He went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs. He had a double and a homer.

Eli Graham had a double and a single and drove in two. Maddox Moore doubled, singled and scored two. Cole Blevins had two hits and scored twice. Luke Ponczka and Carter Durant scored two. Brice Knox had two RBIs.

Durant’s .483 batting average leads the Falcons. Blevins leads in on-base percentage at .627.

West (16-3, 11-2) led 9-0 after two innings, and the Spiders (5-14, 2-10) didn’t score until the fifth.

Brant Graham (4-1) breezed through four innings, facing only 15 batters, for the win. Chase Fisher pitched the fifth.

West returns to action on Monday at Lake Norman. West plays at Northwest Cabarrus on Tuesday and hosts Central Cabarrus on Thursday.

CONCORD — South Rowan beat Central Cabarrus 10-0 early in the season, but the SPC is unpredictable.

The Vikings (5-12, 2-10) beat the Raiders 8-1 in a rematch that began on Thursday and was completed on Saturday.

Central scored six runs in the second inning in windy, rainy conditions on Thursday to take control and the Raiders never got back in the game. South (11-7, 8-5) didn’t score until the seventh.

Marshal Faw (3-3) took the loss.

Jackson Parsons drove in two for Central. Andre Vaughn and Tellis Bumgarner did the job on the mound.

South plays at East Rowan on Tuesday.
